Sorry but I don't know a source for just the cap. However I do know the same caps are used on the Auto Lite headlight relays I purchased on eBay. The same cap is also used on my Auto Lite O/D relay. The headlght relays I purchased were not too expensive so you may want to check out eBay for one just to get the cap.

Thanks, you help me take most of the guessing out. Doese the piece with the tips on it have cap on one end and open on the other? I'm wondering if I could build something that would work. I love a challenge but would rather buy it. Thanks

CG Sailor-

The "missing" end piece looks approximately like the brass piece that holds an eraser on a wooden lead pencil, with two tips (opposite each other) on the end that you push in and rotate, to lock it in place.

I'm not too computer savvy, and we have a family health issue right now.

If no one posts a picture of this piece soon, I'll try to get my spouse to take a digital photo of it, and post it here. I don't know what else would contain this piece, other than a similar ammeter.

CG Sailor-

Your two photos are basically what I have on the back of my '36 ammeter.

What I don't see in the pictures is the piece which you push down on and rotate to lock in the glass fuse. When I put an inch and a quarter 20 amp glass fuse in my holder the end piece locks it tightly in place.

If You have a foto, You may post it here.

If You don?t know how,  it is as easy:

Click the "reply" button to get into the "post reply" window.
After filling Your text, You find the button  ?Additional options ? at the bottom.
Now two rows open to put Your picture?s file link in.  Usually 150-200 KB size will be accepted.
If Yours are bigger than 300 KB, You must reduce them, maybe as follows:

If You open Your file with Photo Studio, You can choose "size of picture" (?? /have the german version "Bildgr??e") and than give in e.g. 50%, (save as "temp" )- this will reduce the file size reasonably.

POC admin Mark Olson suggests: ?All posted photos on the web look fine at 72 dots per inch.  It is the way all monitors display things - higher resolution is fine for printing - in fact you need 200-300 dots per inch to get a good print out.  Most stuff posted on the web can't be printed unless it has a linked high resolution photo you can click on to print.?

If You have a scanner, do as I did not knowing the secrets of  grafic plus digitals:
scan a print with 100 dpi or even at black and white, so at least we get an impression of Your picture.

The fuse doesnt look like the same as a regular car Buss fuse. The braket has a push and twist type holder. A glass type would just fall out. The size of the holding bracket is about twice the circumference and has the notches. If i could send a picture to someone via email, they would be able to see what I was talking about. I didnt have the holding bracket on my original guage so I took that off of another to make the one. The wiring diagram called for one so I assumed it neede it. Thanks

CG Sailor-

I measured the 20 amp fuse that is on the back of the ammeter of my '36. It is an inch and one quarter long.

Etched in the metal cap on one end is: SFE 20  BUSS     Buss is the name of the manufacturer. I would imagine any auto parts store would have them, or could order some for you. They usually come in a tin of 5 fuses.

Thanks for the responce. Do you know were i may be able to purchas the fuse. I have tried online and havent come up with anything. Do you have a picture of it? Was a glass fuse or some other type? Thanks

there were two different length  glass tube fuses a short and long i dont know the length of the short but your car takes the longer one which is 1 1/4", and yes it does push in and twist to hold it .

I'm still stuck on the fuse size. I put a 20 amp glass type in it and the glass type is to small. It looks as if there are notches were it could be pushed in and twisted. I have pictures but they are to big in size for me to load. I could send them via e-mail if someone would help. I would hate to pull this back off the car to rig a newer fuse block. Please help guys.

Thanks for the info. I too have a wiring diagram and thats why I put the fuse section on the back of the guage. I have a picture that I tried to upload and the size was to big. I have most of the dash wired and it looks like a spegetti dinner. Every time I look at a picture I find things that are not where I thought they were. I can email the picture to show you what I am talking about. This is when I had it out. I have to make a long trip tomarrow so wont be back at the car for another week.

I'm looking at wiring diagrams for both the P1 and P2. They both have fuses at the ammeter and those fuses feed all the lighting (head, tail, dash, and dome).

The fuse holder the my '35 ammeter looks like it would hold a standard glass automotive fuse. Take a measurement of your fuse holder and let us know what length and width it appears to be.

If you can't find a fuse to fit the ammeter, you could buy an inline fuse holder so your wire will still be protected.

A 20 amp glass fuse is fairly long, as glass fuses go. I imagine it's purpose is to protect the headlights and tail lights, etc.

I really doubt that Plymouth would have made a car with no fuse protection; both my '36s were/are P-2s.

As I stated below, any accessories (radio, heater, horn, etc.) would most likely have their own fuse.

If this is not the info you need, keep asking. Myself or some one else should be able to help.

I have a picture of what I am talking about but its file is too big. The fuse appears to be twice the size of a glass fuse. I took a spare and added the fuse section to my guage. My guage appears to be the original one. Was it possible to have a car without the fuse? I do have a heater and it was a delux if that helps.

Counting my present one, I've owned 2 1936 Plymouths from 1969-now. Both had a fuse holder on the rear of the speedometer/gauge cluster. It takes a 20 amp fuse. It is the main and only fuse for the car, unless you also have (fused) radio, heater, add-on turn signals, etc. The horn probably also had a separate fuse.

The manual for my '35 says the fuse at the ammeter is a 20 amp. I would think you could get those fuses at a radioshack or other electronics supply store.

A previous owner had replaced the fuse with an in-line circuit breaker so I've never really messed with mine but it appeared to be a standard automotive glass fuse.

This link should show you what I mean....

No one knows if there is a fuse in the guages of a 36 P2?
I have one with and one without.
This is my first time working on a classic and using a 6 volt original wiring harness. Help please, anything!

I was wondering if anyone can help with my ammeter/fuse. I am in the process of rewiring my 36 P2 with a new wiring harness and I cannot figure out the fuse. My original guage did not have the fuse bracket. I had a second guage and combined the two to make one with the fuse bracket attached. Can anyone tell me if someone is selling these and where would I get them.  Also, does anyone have a picture? Thanks.
