Pipe Thread Fitting Question

Pipe fittings are tapered so you just need to snug them up then wrench them a little more. Go ahead and put some pipe dope or sealant on the threads. With 90 degree fittings, snug them up finger tight then use a wrench to point them in the right direction,

Fittings like these do not have to be tightened with a lot of force.? You could simply use a little dab of silicon gasket sealer or any good temperature resistive pipe dope.? Screw the fittings in until you start to feel resistance building due to the tapered pip thread.? If you feel that the fitting can not be turned a full 360 degrees then just move it into it?s final position.? Pipe threads are not like machine bolts they do not have to be torqued down.

I had my 29U Plymouth's oil pump rebuilt.? The work was done well: new bushing, gear, vanes, springs, and the inside cover was polished smooth.? However, in the process, the machine shop removed the two brass fittings from the pump.? Now I have to put the two fittings back on.? They have tapered pipe threads, with flare fittings on the other end.? I cannot just ?tighten them down until they a snug?, because they have to end up in a certain position.? One is an elbow fitting, the other is a special T-fitting with a takeoff for the vacuum tank/gas pump.?

I have always wondered how they put these type fittings on back then and got them in the right position, with no leaks.? ? Now I would really like to know.

If I strip the threads of otherwise break the fittings, they only recourse will be to get replacement fittings off a used oil pump.

I am considering using an anaerobic sealant that is oil and pressure resistant.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
