Fuel delivery questions...

New mechanical fuel pump for '57 230ci.. also to '59..

I've found Carquest can often get things when given a specific part # for a brand they actually carry (like Airtex).

M847 is the current number for pumps which will fit all six cylinder engines, but may not fit in the 57 to 59 chassis.
This number is a Federal Mogul / Carter number which changed up from 577 several years ago, possibly to signify a modern diaphragm material but more likely to justify a higher price.

Hmmm... I looked at NAPA and Autozone and they both listed fuel pumps for '57 Plymouths, but they both appear to be electric pumps. You may want to try "Then and Now Automotive" http://www.then-now.com/The_Cellar/cellar.htm .... They have a large selection of both fuel pumps and rebuild kits.

If the available pump hits the frame or something else, just take the top off it and rotate it to clear. I don't have a pump in front of me and I don't remember how may machine screws hold the top on, but you can rotate it one hole or more as the screws are evenly spaced on the circumference. If you do it, Just remember to hold the diaphragm down (arm pushed up as far as it will go) while you re-tighten the screws. If you don't do it, the diaphragm might rupture the first time the engine is turned over.

The various pumps will all fit the engine, Those specs are the same from the late 30s on up. I can understand that there may be clearance problems with an earlier pump used in the 57 to 59 chassis. On the 55, there is no clearance problem.

I tried to put an earlier one on about 8 years ago. As I recall, it hit the crossmember.

Oh-oh.... I don't like the sounds of this. Why would a fuel pump from an earlier model not work on a '57 engine? I'm asking this because I just rebuilt a '57 and plan on swapping out my old '55 engine. Am I going to have a problem with that?

I cannot think of any reason why the earlier pump will not work on a 57. It is still available new from Carter. The number changed up from 577 several years ago and the price went up as well.

There is a pretty good chance that he can help you out on rebuild kits for the carburetor and fuel pump.

I am having some fuel issues. I cannot find a new fuel pump for a 1957 Plymouth Six cyl. engine. The 57-59 cars use a different fuel pump that the 56 and earlier. I found a fuel pump rebuild kit on Vintage Power Wagons.com for real cheap. Will it work on a civilian passenger car pump or will it only work on a Power Wagon. Also, the throttle shafts are loose in the carb, and the butterflies have worn the venturis out of round. Where can I get a reman or new carb?
