It's always good to check locally first. NAPA is close and you'd be surprized at how much they do have. NAPA? has your stoplight switch for around $7.00 plus shipping. Boy, am I embarrassed! I should read more carefully. I guess I looked at the switch and it looked just like the last backup light swith I had, so i just ran off at the mouth from there.

I'm sorry for the confusion. The part that I removed came from a block in the brake line accessed through the service panel on the drivers side floor, not the transmission.

the one that came out of the transmission appears to be original. From the picture it looks like the "ball bearing" (at least it looks like one) that should be sticking nearly half out of the threaded end that screws into the transmission is missing. This is a mechanical switch. When the transmission is in neutral or any forward gear the ball on the end of the switcj sits in a detent on the shift rail and the switch is open. When shifted into reverse the ball is forced inward into the switch and closes the circuit. The Delco Morains unit is a brake light switch - most likely for a GM - and is brake fluid operated.

I am doing brake work on my '53 including the replacement of a faulty brake light switch. I purchased one on ebay that was said to be for my application, however I have discovered it to be different part than the one I have removed. My question: Did I purchase the wrong part, or has my plymouth had some different model switch/block installed during its lifetime? The part from ebay came in a box with the part number 4770 from Delco Moraine, and the threadded section has an outside diameter of 1/2 an inch vs. the 3/8 inch OD of the part that came from the car. Thanks.
