Plain old fashioned paint thinner works well as a soaking cleaner.

Thaks for the information regarding cleaning. Does anyone know what's inside the box? I assume it's something akin to steel wool.

If your air cleaner ir really dirty you can soak it in old-fashioned carburetor cleaner (if you can find it).Wash it thoroughly afterward and then re-oil it as already suggested. The only downside of this method is that it will remove the paint as well.

Do you have the owner's manual? The cleaning procedure should be given in the manual.

The air filter on my 1933 has wire mesh in it and the cleaning procedure is to wash it with kerosene then to re-oil it (just like the oil filler cap wire mesh filter). I would be surprised if the procedure for the 31 was much different.

I need some insight regarding the air silencer. It's quit dirty having sat around for thirty years. The body seems to be filled with some type of material. I would like to flush it out with a solvent but don't want to damage what ever is behind the perforated tubing going through it. It has sealed seams so I can't get to the material inside, what ever it is, and I don't think just blowing air through it is going to open the clogged perforation holes. Open to ideas.
