I went through quiet a learning experience on my 40 P-9 trunk hold open mechanism and the chrome external hinges. Once I found the hardware ( 2 years ) and "unmodified" the mechanism attachment that someone had done, I am now up and going. If you would like pictures as installed send me an E mail and I will send pictures as E Mail attachments since I do not know how to post pictures on this fourm.

There are no springs on the 40 trunk lid--springs didn't come into use until 1941.  The 40 used a ratchet/locking device on the right hand hinge.  When you opened the lid, you went slightly "over top" and a cam locked into place to hold the lid open.  When you wanted to close it, you again lifted the lid "over top" to release the cam -- from that point on, all the weight of the trunk lid was in the hands of the person holding the lid.....in '41 they mounted a spring closer to the center line of the body that would hold the lid in the open position.

Can anyone explain how the trunk lid hinge springs are installed?  Where do they hook in?
