56 Transmission Fluid

hi,  just got done restoring the whole front end of my 56 savoy. first time i ever pulled an engine out. it was fairly easy. ( i have limited budget with 2 in college ) have to do alot myself. anyways, if you have access to a hoist, that front seal is easy to change. pull the torque convertor out with the engine,this will expose the front seal. when reinstalling the engine, first disconnect the torque convertor and place that back in the transmition housing, that way you won't damage the new seal. replace the motor and reconnect the torque convertor to the engine. replace the tran housing bolts and should be good to go. as for the type A fliud check with the older parts stores for that, some places still might be able to locate some for you. good luck,    kevin

The Powerflight in my 1956 Plymouth needs Fluid Type A.  Up until about a year ago I had a source to obtain the fluid.  Actually I brought about 15 quarts of the stuff.  The transmission is currently leaking from what appears to be the front seal.  Lacking the funds to have it fixed, first problem and finding someone to do it, second problem, I have to add fluid from time to time.  Sooner or later I'm going to run out of Type A.  Any one know if Dexron will work.  Also has anyone tried a transmission sealer in the Powerflite.  The odometer shows 45,000 miles, and I believe this to be correct.
