Will someone please explain the mechanical reasoning for each wheel cylinder to have a smaller diameter piston/cup in the front and larger piston/cup in the rear?  Thank you

As the drum turns, it will tend to pull in the front shoe (self-energizing) but that is not true of the trailing shoe. So to balance the braking between the front self-energizing shoe and the rear, they put a smaller piston in front.
