Thanks, ever have one of those days. I looked in my own book and saw the same things.
But i also see a listing under  "Group 6-C CLUTCH cover and pressure plate assembly --30-U, PA, PB as listed for part #317348." This would lead me to the opinion that the later style will work just fine. But, as you go down through the parts list there are apparently differences in the actual pressure plate for early and later 30U engines. My engine # is U227832 which would be in the early group (as far as the clutch references show) but it is actually a later engine in that it has the fuel pump and the water pump. I knew I had these books for some reason.

Looking at the illustrations in the 1928-33 Master Parts Book, it appears that the Q and U shared the same basic clutch with the pressure springs in towers. The 30-U illustration looks the same but as it has a different illustration I guess there are visible differences I don't see. The PA and PB illustrations show clutches that look like the "modern" on in my 1933.

Not sure this helps, but it seems to me that the "no brand or part number" clutch you found on your parts car is the original style. From a functional point of view I can't say if it makes any difference.

You can find the specifications for you clutch on my web site at: http://www.ply33.com/Models/30-U/specs.html

I figured I would take it to McGuire's or one of the other bearing companies, but thought someone else had already done the legwork and knew what worked.

I would take the bearing to a bearing distributor to see if they can match it.

The throw out bearing on my 30U went out and I need to replace it. I want to have a rebuilt clutch plate, pressure plate and throwout bearing and things ready when I tear it apart. When I dug through the parts boxes I found some questions.

I have two pressure plates, both of which are 9" with six springs.

The first is a Borg & Beck Co Type 9" A-1 Model 551. This has the springs and throwout fingers enclosed under the cover like what I would call modern design. The fingers are 2 1/4" from the back of the clutch face. The compressed springs in the assembly appear to be about 1 7/8".

The second is one that I took off a 30U parts car. It has no Brand or Part numbers that I can find. The springs are enclosed in what I will call towers that extend from the back of the enclosure. The throwout fingers are exposed. The spring in this assemble appear to be about 1 15/16" in compressed length.

Question: Which is correct, or are both? Is the Borg and Beck a better choice, and will it work?

Now for the throwout bearing.

I have three and all have the grease fitting banged up. The bearing has NICE BALL BEARING CO. NICETOWN PHIL. PA No.5068. Anyone know of a replacement number?

Thanks, Gary
