Thanks Bill, I guess Chris never came back to this thread since I got no response. When I ordered the one piece, endless, vulcanized seals from Steele Rubber, they shipped the 3M sealer with the order at my request. I did not think they had the chemicals but they did.

Do you have any part numbers for the 3M sealants needed to install the rear windows?

I did a quick internet search for "3M Clear Auto Sealer" and I
got a "hit" from Ace Hardware.  They probably do not have
it in stock (but might at a large store), but it looks like they
can get it.  There was an Ace part number.  So, if you have
an Ace store in your area, you might try them and see if they
can get it for you.

pleased to hear the glass is tempered.

Steele Rubber's installation instructions specify "3M Auto Bedding & Glazing Compound" to seal the rubber to the body, and "3M Clear Auto Sealer" to seal the glass to the rubber.   Have already found the first product and still searching locally for the 2nd.

Herculite was the PPG trademark for tempered glass. If you go to the search button at the top of this page and type "herculite" you will find a post that describes all the types of galss used plymouths around 1940.

Seal the rubber weather strip to the glas with "Welt Seal".

Install the window with attached weather seal in the body.

Work a coating of "Welt Seal" between the outside of the body and the rubber weather seal.

Chris, in 1997 I didn?t put sealant around my new windshield glasses too, because I didn?t want the mess and the fresh rubber weatherstrip seemed able to keep water out. I had to take one glass out half a year later and to my surprise the hole window frame was completely wet under the weatherstrip and had begun to rust at it?s corners! The car hadn?t been in any rain that year but only had been washed after the glasses had been put in the first time. So, the humidity had stayed half a year without drying.
I immediately redid both glasses with appropriate sealant. It was less messy as I suspected.

if you are going to drive it in the rain or even park it in the rain it would pay to.apart from the rain they are liable to leak even when you wash the car.

put the rear window glass back in today,? the new rubber seals from Steele fit very well.? at those prices, they better.?
after we finished, I read the instructions from Steele.
they specified two 3M sealants, one between the body & the rubber, the other between the rubber & glass.
I installed the new seals dry, like we did our VW bug seals back in the day.
will I have leak problems?? do I need to take it all out & re-do with the sealants?

I had my rear windows made by the Glass Man in Calif. Herculite I have not heard of but sounds like the company that made them.
The trunk lid seal attaches to the body. What you see on the lid is probably transfer from the seal when it was hot. Do not order the new seal from Pro Antique. They show the wrong seal in their catalog. I bought it and had to find another type.

good morning all,
2 questions for the experts:

We removed rear glass from our unrestored P4 sedan yesterday and immediately noticed it is not sandwich-type safety like the side windows. Has "Herculite" etched on each piece.? Is this tempered glass?? Hope so.

Does the weatherstrip around the trunk lid attach to the trunk lid or to the body? Ours is attached (poorly) to the body but it looks like there was once weatherstripping around the perimeter of the lid.
