On the A and LA blocks, the engine number is stamped on a machined pad on the left side of the engine at the front, just below the head.? ?You should be able to see it by standing in front of the engine, driver' side, and look at the block just below the head.? Providing the generator is not blocking the view.

Engine numbers prior to 1958 started with the model number which consisted of a letter for the make (P - Plymouth, D - Dodge, S -DeSoto, C - Chrysler and T - Truck) and one or digits for the model number.

A 1956 Plymouth V8 would start with P29 while a Fury engine would be FP29.

There were three V8 engines available in 1956 American Plymouths - 277 (A block), 303 (A block, Fury only) and 270 (Dodge block, Plaza and Savoy).

Engine numbers for the three -

277 (A block) : P29-1001 to P29-4000; P29-80001 to P29-250000; P29-274001 to P29-329132

303 (A block, Fury) : FP29-1001 & up

270 (Dodge block) : P29-40001 to P29-80000; P29-250001 to P29-274000

Please note these numbers are STAMPED INTO the block and are not raised numbers cast into the block.

According to the "Standard Catalog of Chrysler" the engine number can be found on V8 engines on the flat surface near the front of the block between the two cylinder heads.  The number resembles the serial number but may not match.  This number should not be used for automobile identification.

The number would not be on a removable part like the intake manifold, it would be on the engine block. On my '37 it is on the left side of the block up high. Yours could be either side.

Good Luck.

hi
where do I look to find the engine # on a V-8 1956 plymouth engine?  From casual observation, all I saw  was a # on top of the intake.
thanks
