P11 Oil Filtering System

Plymouths were fitted differently at different times: Early on there was a sealed throwaway canister type filter. Then the lower end (standard/roadking) had no filter at all. And the later cars seem to have a container that takes a replaceable cartridge. Which cars came with which is pretty complex. But they can all be fitted with replaceable element bypass type oil filter assemblies.

The later big (25 inch long) block (Chrysler, DeSoto and some larger Dodge truck) engines were set up to accept a full flow filter which will not work or fit on the Plymouth engine. Assuming that your Dodge truck has the small (23 inch long) block then the filter in it should also work in the Plymouth.

In any case, there are a number of oil filter assemblies available, both factory and after market, that can bolt right on to replace your disposable canister type. eBay and swap meets are your friend for this. I have a stash of sealed canister filters for my car and when they run out I have a factory assembly that takes cartridges that will go on the car.

The after market and factory replaceable cartridge filter assemblies do not all that the same element. So you probably want to look out for one that is identical to the one in your Dodge so you only have to buy one type of filter element. As near as I can tell, the filter elements for all of them are still available at your local auto supply store (though you may have to order it rather than just pull it off the shelf).

Alternatively, there is a fellow advertising in the Plymouth Bulletin (the Plymouth Owners Club's magazine) a unit that looks like the sealed canister filter but apparently comes apart and holds a small modern filter inside.

Hello All

I just picked up a 1941 Plymouth P11. This is my attemp at a restoring a car. I have completed a 1945 Willy MB Jeep and a 1954 Dodge M37. So I know what it takes to restore something.

Anyway, I understand that the oil filter is a throw-a-way kind. can you explain to me what this means? Also, can this system be upgrade to use a replacement filter? The engine in the Plymouth is the same as in the my Dodge truck. Can I upgrade this car engine with the same type of filter that is in my truck? Please if you can post some pictures?
