Scott Young advertises in the Plymouth Bulletin and redoes the dash glass for the '40.  He's in California.  The dash knobs are impossible to find so follow the posted lead to get the knobs from the gentleman in Florida.  As for the window frames - the body is the same all the way thru the first series '49 P15's, glass, etc., all interchanges.

I got a phone call from Wayne today in responce to an e-mail I sent him on saturday , nice guy ! he seems to know what he is talking about ..we talked for quite a while about the cars needed repairs,  the only problem is in the cost, wayne will make me any part i need but, i have to cut out the old one and ship it to him for the pattern  ( the trunk latch panel  )  and the trunk floor .

It is nice to deal with people that care about your projects..........Ron

It looks like it would do the job. You will have to be the judge of how well it meets your needs. I don't think you are going to find anything that costs less. I would be interested if anyone else has any experience with this fabricator.

Do you have the web address for R cars? I got the trunk pan for my '41 coupe from the Plymouth Doctor. If you check out the post titled "'41 Coupe Rebuild" in the General Discussion section you can see a picture of the pan and the before and after pictures of the trunk. I had the pan custom built to match my original exactly. It was not cheap. The Plymouth Doctor actually works with a custom metal shop that makes the pieces. The shop has an agreement with Wayne to not accept any Plymouth work directly, so you will need to go through Wayne "The Plymouth Doctor" if you want to use their services.

I would like to thank Bob for his help today, with his help i have determined a few things, my coupe is a p10, and it is missing its running boards .

I also sent off an e-mail to "the plymouth doctor" for the sheet metal parts i need for the trunk repair  .

I also found a vendor that has the toe board . I would like to hear from anyone that may have done business with them or knows some one that has.   the name of the  web site is   R car  ...stands for ...rods customs and restorations,,,,,,his toe board is allmost  $ 100 cheaper than the ply doctors.
i sent him an e mail also for information on this part...

I have also found a " tanks " dealer not to far from where i live , so hopefully they will be able to help out with that issue.

everything considered it has been a pretty good day.    thanks again to all that have helped

Ron,
I have had a 1940 P-10 Business coupe for twenty years this Fall.  It had the running board delete option, Like I mentioned in my first post this morning It has what I would call a rocker panel, and like Lindsay mentiioned Stainless steel spears that run the lenght of the rocker panels.  Also the running board delete '40's had gravel sheilds on the front of the rear fenders.  These items are like hen's teeth, very hard to find.  In the 20 years of owning my Plymouth, I have been unable to locate them.
A freind in Georgia had the same problem as me, so he made a pattern of the gravel sheilds, sent me the pattern and we both used the spray on black bedliner to get the effect of gravel shields.

Hopefully the photo wil show you the rocker panel, s/s spear and "fake" Gravel shiels.

Hope this helps. and don't be afraid to email me if you have any questions, I will do my best to answer themj

Hello Ron,

Welcome to this site.
Many questions can be answered here by folks that have "been there, done that". Never hold back a question, even if it seems simple.

I'll add my two cents worth in to attempt to answer your current questions.

Original, fuel tanks will fit most closed car Plymouths from 1940 till 1948. I have found only military, and wagons, and a few special order cars to be different. As far as how a re-manufactured tank would fit, I would consult the manufacturer.
Currently, I have a original style tank in stock. It looks identical to the above mentioned tanks (40-48), but it has a larger capacity. This requires only one change, and that is the lenght of the mounting straps. Everything else is the same.

Have you tried the "Plymouth Doctor" for your floor pans?
Wayne does a great job, and is very fair to deal with. Check plymouthdoctor.com

Also, at this time, I have in stock an original front seat for the 40 Plymouth coupe. It has been nicely re-covered, but could be changed to fit your needs. Of coarse it has been stored properly, and in a clean garage with my cars. NO rodent or musty smell or evidence. Have other interior items too.

Running board delete was not as coomon, but I'm sure as others will state, they were around.
A thin piece of stainless was a long the lower rocker to spiff things up a bit. I currently have  an original set in stock too.

I'm not sure where you are located, and all of the items, with exception of the seat, would be easy to ship. Drop me a line at if I can help you with anything.

Enjoy your new coupe!
And welcome!

Ron, Welcome aboard.

If you haven't already, the first two things I would do is purchase the new issue of the "Hemmings Motor News" and join the Plymouth Owner's Club to recieve their great magazine.  Both these magazines have vendors that advertise parts for your car.

When it comes to sheetmetal, at this point there is no one reproducing the trunk floor pan, but I think the front toe boards are being reproduced.

I have used Moore's Salvage in Rapid City,SD for some good  metal parts.
The phone number is 605-348-4926. they also have a website.  They should be able to help you with the vent windows and front seat. In fact I got my complete front seat assembly from them  years ago.

In 1940 Plymouth used the non running board option on their cars.  Instead of the running boards, there would be a rocker panel running from the rear of the front fender to the front of the rear fender.  Plus the front of the rear fenders would have gravel guards.

Hope this helps and good luck with your 1940 Plymouth, they are a great car

You can email me at and I will try to help if possible

Hello to all of you, newbe here , and have just picked up a 1940 coupe that needs some attention . I have a ton of questions about this car as I have never owned a prewar car before. the old girl is in pretty  good shape and was sitting in a barn from1968, the barn fell in on it and created some damage , it isnt anything that cant be fixed tho.
my first question....i need a new gas tank , i ve looked into TANKs website, but all they list is 41 up and pre 39...nothing for a 40 ...will either of these tanks be the same as my 1940 ?
second question ....i  need the toe board ,and sheet metal for the trunk floor, any suggestions as to where i can find these parts ? i have tried most of the common suppliers ,but no luck.
third question. need interior parts, headliner , side panel materials, seat coverings or materials. and a  rebuildable front seat... some one put some ugly bucket seats in the front. this car does have the optional rear jump seats that fold up .  I also need all of the knobs for the dash and the instrument cluster needs restored. any ideas on how or where ?
question four. i have read that not all of the 1940 s came with running boards....mine has none at this time, but how  do i tell if it was built that way ? the fenders do have the mounting holes if that helps any.
question five. , i need the vent window frames, any available? if so where ?

It took only an hour to get this old girl running, and she sounds pretty good . cant drive it yet as the brakes need going through and it needs an exhaust system.

I do belong to another site for the A bodies mopars. i have a 1968 origonal GTS 340 4 speed car in the process of restoring her also . this car is numbers matching and in pretty decent shape when i got it.

My other cars are not mopars , a 1966 elcamino and a 1985 I ROC Z... the IROC is finished and the elky is near completion . the old coupe will be next !

Thank you all in adavance for your help in saving another grand old gal.....Ron
