Oil Filler Tube Shield on '41

This post begs a question that has entering my mind on occassion. What is the proper position of the oil filler tube filter cap. Should it be fully "up" or "down" on the tube. Sense crank case venting of oil vapor is affected there must be an optimum position.

I live on old route 66 which was replaced by interstate 40. I remember hearing stories of attendants that would check the oil and not put the stick all the way in so that it "looked" like it was a quart low then take a cardboard can that was empty grab the open side with a shop rag to cover the hole and re open it on the other side and sell it to the unknowing customer.

Actually, I am old enough to remember both the glass bottles of oil at the gas station (containing oil pumped out of the oil drum in back) and the METAL quart cans opened with the can cutter spout. I also remember the oil cans used by the service shops that had a swing spout with the twist valve used to replenish the crankcase after an oil change.

I think this shield looked strange to me as the car had a non-stock oil cap that was much larger than the original. When I replaced the larger cap with an original style it just didn't look right.

I THINK IT WAS BIG TO CATCH BIG DRIPS.  If u are old enuff to have poured oil out of a can without a funnel rather than a pour bottle u would be pleased that it is the size it is.

Please see the attached photo and confirm that this is the correct oil filler tube and shield for a '41. The shield seems so much larger than the cap that is just doesn't look right. The shield has a diameter of approximately 3 7/8".
