Thanks Go and Elmo,
I can see why this would be a touchey subject.  And thanks for the link.  My father and i were talking it over and we would like to keep it as stock as possible.  IF we could get it 6v i would like it alot.  because then i could keep it all the way it came from the factory.  However my father was saying that 12v might be safer as you can get brighter lights and easyer starting.  let me read what you guys wrote ......  and i will get back to you.

thanks

HI   Ian   regarding the 12v conversion , it can be a very touchy subject on this forum, if you need any info  send  me a PM  and i will send you the info that i have found out ,having done the conversion before ,then you can make your own mind up wether to do it or not. Yes they did have an oil filter ,although it was only a bypass system and did not filter all the oil although it was much better than nothing

last Year, we had a profound discussion on 6 / 12 V here. Who remembers the topic?

Thanks for the info.  So would it be worth doing it?  there is no way to retain the generator is there.   I am still looking at this truck i have not decided yet.  For the head lights and cowl lights what would i need to do??   Also if i made the switch to 12v could i make the system negitive ground at the same time or would i leave it positive ground.  Again i am not too firmillar with 6v and would like to make this as drivable as possible but keep it as stock as possible.  Also this may sound like another dumb question but these motors did not have oil filters correct?

Thanks
Ian

The only gauge that will cause problems is the gas gauge, a resistor between the ignition switch in the form of a marker light bulb (from a newer car) wired in series with the gauge  is all that is required. The ammeter  leads need to be reversed if polarity is reversed.

The starter is a series wound motor and is not voltage fussy but it will spin a lot faster.

I am sure this has been covered on here many times. I am looking at a 41 plymouth truck that has no wireing, and since the end goal is a classic driver i was wondering if you could lend me some info on this swap. I don't understand much about postive 6v ground system but do know negitive 12v ground. I was thinking that the best route might be a painless wiring harness or the like using the heavyer gauge wire in case i ever want to switch to six volt. I know that a alternator would need to take the place of the gnerator. I also found that if i want to retain my stock gages then resisters are needed. For lights i am alittle confused.

thanks for all your help.

Also if i wanted to kep the 6v in order to retain the stock components i could use this to power an aftermarket radio installed in the glove box right??

Or if i switch to 12v then I would need one of these to keep my stock gauges right??
