P15 steering column

Once the floor board is removed from a P15, removal of the steering column is relatively easy through the interior of the car although it may be necessary to remove the master cylinder to get the pedals out of the way. Make careful notes as to how the shift levers go together.

If it is just the box that needs to be overhauled, removal of the wheel and unfastening the column jacket allows the box and tube (steering wheel shaft) to be withdrawn from under the car on US models.

If it is only the jacket that needs to be removed, removal of the steering wheel, dashboard clamp , front seat and the bolts holding the steering box to the frame should allow the column to be tipped downward for removal of the jacket. It is also necessary to undo the gear shift lever at the lower end and loosen the clamp which holds the jacket to the steering box.   An easy job ...... absolutely not.  My choice, unless I was completely disassembling this car for restoration would be to refinish the steering column right in place using conventional enamel.

the only experience i have is removing the steering columns that have a floor shift.   In those u need to first remove the wheel from the column, and the fixture that holds the column tight under the dash.  then the appropriate floor boards.  then pull the drag link off of the sterring box and take out the bolts that hold the box to the frame.  then feed the column and box out which ever way will fit--either up thru the cab or down thru the engine compartment.  Check your service manual--the specific directions may be in one of several chapters, not necessarily the one on steering.

Am restoring 48 Plymouth The next item I am tackling is the steering wheel and shifing tubes. Is there any tricks in removing them that would be helpful ini knowing. I intend to sand and powder paint them.
