I fill the same about the old wagon. My brother got a 1951 plymouth suburban about three years ago. I wanted one every since. I drove mine yesterday on the highway. I have to get the bias tire off of it. It caught every groove in the road. I still kept a smile on my face. I went about 60 miles and when I got back home. I told my wife that I was very lucky to be the caretaker of this wonderful little wagon.

I always liked the sound of a split manifold with dual exhausts on a Mopar flat six. I guess one of the reasons I always liked these wagons was their styling from the rear view. It sounds goofy, but I have always felt that cars have personalities that sort of go with the way they look from the front and the back. Station wagons from the 30s and 40s never seemed to have very much personality from the rear, they all seemed the same, with the exception of the T & C Wagons.

But these Plymouths have a personality. All of the woody wagons from GM, Ford & Chrysler, although I like them, have a rear view that looks as though they were all built to the same basic plan before the tail lights and rear bumpers were added on. As the first all-steel wagon and without a spare tire on the tailgate, the rear styling on this Plymouth has a well integrated look, like someone actually gave some thought to what it should look like from the rear. The way the tail lights are mounted down low gives it a distinctive look that is very different from GM & Ford.

I don't know what the cargo area is like in the Plymouth, but I had a 54 Chrysler wagon that had a beautiful cargo area. Stainless steel strips about 1" wide ran the lenght of the cargo floor that was made of finished wood, possibly marine plywood. I really liked that car. It had the Hemi V-8 with Powerflite automatic and power steering. In 1994, I drove it to Carlisle, Pa from East Tenn. That car would go once you got its weight moving with it. I had it up to around 80 at times, passing traffic. People would come up to me at gas stations and rest stops, commenting on getting passed on the interstate by it earlier. A real attention getter.

Of course, as well as it would go, it didn't stop nearly that well, and it wasn't really practical to drive it very much in today's traffic with everyone else equipped with disc brakes. I sold it in 1999.

But, I still have a soft spot for Mopar wagons. If I bought another one, it would be a Plymouth of this vintage or possibly a Dodge from 53-54. My dad had a 49 Suburban painted light green. The tail lights on the 49s are mounted up high. I have always wondered why this was changed after only one year. Oh, well.

I am very envious of your Plymouth.

I am getting a bill (sun shield) for it. Thanks foe telling me about the skiets. I have a 51 mercury that has skirts. I think they would be cool. The yellow and white restro picture that I posted is not what I am going to do. I am leaving it along except the color. And adding bill and skirts. THis is the merc.

I am really impressed with that Suburban wagon.? What an excellent resto candidate.? It's your car, and you should do with it what you want.? But, I will say that I really like the brown. It looks right on the car.? Personally, I much prefer it over the yellow & white.? The brown has that "period" look.

I've always liked the looks of the Mopar wagons of this period wearing fender skirts.? My Uncle Jack had a 52 Chrysler wagon in the early 60s with them.? Toooo funky.?

Used to be a TV repair shop down the street from where I grew up had one of these in beige.? The shop went out of business in early 60s.? In 1969, I turned 16, got my driver's license.? Like a lot of kids, I began exploring the surrounding community.? Any small road I'd never been on, I wanted to see where it went.? About 10 miles from home, out in a rural community, I passed a big farmhouse with that car sitting several hundred feet away next to an outbuilding.? I recognized it immediately.? Over the next several years or so, I'd pass there from time to time, and it was still there.? It left there sometime in the late 70s.? I always wished I'd checked on it.

Great looking suburban. The only other wagon I've seen in Malibu Brown was a '49 woody... I wonder how rare that color really is?

I love the color, but then I suppose I'm a bit biased ;D

The car took good pictures. It has a little rust. I want to take care of that. I am having it blasted to see what all is there and then getting it fixed. I will probably go with light yellow at the bottom and white at the top. Here are some pics of what I am going to paint like. I am going to leave the car alone other than that. I am going to leave the 6 in it and not street rod it. Not that that is wrong . I have a 51 mercury that is all cut up. But here are some pics. I don't know hows pictures they are. They were sent to me.

I finally found a nice suburban. I am getting it painted in feb. The guy is busy. I am getting all new window , and having the motor rebuilt. All I will need is a new interior. The one in it is ok for now. Will send the new pictures when I have it done. Merry Christmas to all
