Hi Kevin

I don't know if a '34 lug bolt and bolt pattern is the same as '41; perhaps someone else can answer that.  If it is, then I measure the '34 lug bolt at 1/2in. diameter with 22 threads per in.  Its overall length is 1 9/16in.  The threaded part is 13/16in. long and the hex head is 3/4in.

The pattern on the '34 hub is a 2 1/4in. radius from the center of the hub to the center of a bolt hole or another way of saying that is the 5 holes are centered on a 4 1/2 in. diameter about the hub.  The distance between hole centers is 2 5/8in.

These are my best measurements of parts I have here and might not be true to spec.  I hope this helps to get your '41 on wheels.

Regards,  Doran

My Ply , parts included, is not in D?sseldorf for the next weeks because of service, minor repairs plus new ragtop. So I can?t look for the bolts diameter. Sorry. Greetings ! Go

To all who have replied.

Glad to know that they are left hand threaded.. that will save a lot of hair.

Can someone who has a set of the bolts tell me what the dia and thread is? 7/16 X 24???

Fleiter -- bernbaum  at www.oldmoparts.com -- thanks

mvair -- found McConnell will contact

Bill -- I am in Boston -- way to far away, but we have been exchanging email about modifying this one (41SD). Got the info from Fatman. I also see you over at the Buick sites. I've been considering dropping a 54 onto a late 60/early 70 RIV

Dear Kevin,

in July I got a 20 pc. set of wheel bolts from Andy Bernbaum. Right are U-271R and left are U-271L.
He lists them for 3,- a piece.

(1) the wheels on a '41 Plymouth are attached with bolts.  (2)The bolts on the left side of the car (both front and back) are threaded left. The bolts on the right side of the car are threaded right (I think I got those in the right order.)  The top of the bolt heads are marked with a large "L" or "R" to indicate the thread direction. (3) Lindsay McConnell is a dealer who specialized in '41 parts.  He can get you what you need.  The bolts are also available from several other sources with a little looking.  I think you should just buy what you need from one of them.  (4) I can send you pictures of the bolts and application if it would help. (5) I can check the master parts list and see what years used right and left threaded bolts if that is important.

Lindsay,

I was mistaken when I recalled that you were the person I had responded to a couple of years ago about wheels for a '41 Plym.  I looked through my "sent" email file, which I should have done before I trusted my memory.

I am sorry if my statement causes you any difficulty.... I have sent you a personal email also to hopefully make amends for my careless statement....

Kevin,
I think the wheels from a '49 and later Ford car have the same bolt pattern as the Mopars.  If the drums/hubs on your '41 have bolts  in lieu of studs they most likely are left hand thread front and rear. I  most likely have enough bolts laying around to get the wheels bolted onto your car. I also have a complete set, four wheels with tires that are holding air that you could use if you need a roller. Of course the catch is I am located in So. Cal...

Lindsay....
If I recall correctly..... you are looking for a specific style of wheel for your '41 and the condition has to be as close to new as possible.. I believe I told you I had the style of wheel you were looking for about two years ago.... Bill

I  think the thought behind the L-R hand threads was that the rotation of the wheel could loosen the bolt on the left side if it had R hand threads.  Same thing happens when u use your electric drill as a screw remover-the bit gets loose after a few screws.
I guess they decided that wasn't a big deal if they were tight enuff--some one at a tire store told me to torque the nuts to at least 85 lbs.

I don't know when Chrysler started with the lefty/righty thing, I would guess about 1936 because there seems to have been a lot of changes make to the '36 chassis. I have been told that Chrysler started making a different chassis, much heavier for all of their open cars in '36.

I have a friend that is working on a '67 Plym Fury III, he needed a left front hub which is left hand thread. I finally found one for him at Moore's in Rapid City, SD.

I have a '63 Chrysler 300, I had a flat tire last Sunday.... left front....... going to a car show. I had a spare but no lug wrench, so I called the Auto Club. I noticed that the AC driver went back to his truck twice, getting a larger lug wrench each time. I finally walked over to see what the problem was, he was cussing the guy that had put the nuts on, I told him they were left hand thread, he got a blank look on his face, saying.... ya sure.... I told him trust me... they came right off with very little effort.

A clue to the pattern of Mopar lug bolts/nuts. If they are left hand thread, there will always be a L on either the bolt head or stud. No L.... the bolts/nuts are right hand thread. I have parted out a couple of '39 Plym's that had right hand threads on the left front hub, ie;  at some point in time someone had used a right hub on the left side to get the car going....Bill

To begin with I just need to move the car -- get it rolling  -- so all I need are a couple for each wheel.. Are the reverse thread only on the front? So the thread will be what 1/2 or 7/16x24 -- I can run out to the hardware store for most.. but if these do require reverse thread then I might have an issue.

Do you know from what year to year the bolt was used... I assume it will be the same

Car currently has no wheels/tires.

When did they start the left hand threads? My first auto repairs were attempted on a 63 Plymouth that had LH threads on one side and I figured all cars had them. I nearly busted a gut trying to get the wheels off my 33 Plymouth when I first got it until I figured out that all the wheel bolts were right hand thread.

When did Chrysler start using LH thread lug bolts or nuts?
And when did they stop using LH thread lug nuts?

Hum.
Fine threads. donot have a gauge to measure for you.
How many do you need?
Remember one side has reverse threads!
Probably have enough for a set of four wheels. Sore wish I could find a set of 16 inch MoPar wheels! Still looking for those blooming things... Never thought that it would be this hard.

On the 41 it looks like I need bolts to secure the wheel ( no studs on the drums) -- what is the bolt thread.... and what is the bolt pattern 5 X 4 3/4?
