Your missing vacuum line is not the cause of the engine overspeeding. Look for a malfunctioning throttle valve. The most likely cause is the linkage being reversed.

Thanks for the information on the cause of my engine taking off so fast.  What I found since was that there was supposed to be some connection from one of the ports in the carbureator with the timing/vacume advance in my distributor.  I'm building a connection out of brake line so see if that regulates the air situation.  Hopefully that will solve the problem.   1939P8.

I have a question.  I got my 39 running by following the above steps, but when the engine kicked over it quickly ran at about 4-5000 rpms and I had to shut if off quick, and it kept doing it when I restarted it.  I was afraid of doing damage to the engine which was recently rebuilt.  I believe my carb is getting to much air, but choking it did not help.  Any ideas on what is causing it to run like a race horse?

Did you ever remove the distributor or the spark plug wires?
Did you check the timing and the points to make sure the gap is set correctly?
The nice thing about our engines is that they are very simple to fix.
No computers needed!

I have  a 1939 Plymouth Deluxe in which the engine will not turn over.   I have done the following:

Checked the fuel from the fuel pump to carb to see if it getting gas. It is
Checked the carb and cleaned
Check fuel line from gas tank to fuel pump.  No leaks
Took off distributor cap, check rotor, condense etc.  OKay and is getting spark
Ensured car is tighten down ot manifold
Put in gas
Checked oil level

Is there something I have over looked.  The engine cranks but will not turnover.  Any suggestions.
