It would help to know what state you are in because the requirements to title and untitled vehicle vary from state to state.  As a general rule you will have to have the vehicle VIN number which should be on a metal plate that is attached to the right door jamb, do not go by the body/model numbers attached to the firewall, usually above the steering column.  There are people that advertize in Hemmings, etc., offering titles for sale. I know people that have tried this only to find that they had purchased paper work that did not match their vehicle. The only successful way to use a title from a different vehicle is to have the title, the VIN number plate and the body/model number plates, if applicable. If you are located in California the process is very simple, other states can be a bear.

I recently had to get a title for a untitled '54 Chevy I purchased in Idaho and sold in Idaho before I could haul it home.  We had to "clear" the vehicle with the surrounding states, Oregon, Nevada, because it turned out that there were liens against the vehicle in those states. An interesting thing I have learned in the last few years is that..... in many states if a vehicle has liens against it, which can be in the form of a farmer and/or business having listed the vehicle as an asset for a loan, or if the vehicle was ever reported as being stolen....The vehicle can/will stay in the system even though many years have past.  We encountered this on a untitled vehicle that had not been licensed since 1964 because the original owner, a farmer, had listed it as an asset on a farm loan and the lien against it had never been cleared.
I WOULD CAUTION YOU ABOUT ONE THING....GET A CLEAR TITLE, PROOF OF OWNERSHIP, OR WHAT EVER YOUR STATE REQUIRES BEFORE YOU DO ANY WORK TO THE VEHICLE.....Bill
