'56 Plymouth, door liner

Based on my '67 Beetle, the conical spring is place with the wide section facing the interior of the car and behind the door trim panel.  This keeps the door handle tight against the trim panel.  However, I don't know about the metal liner, on the Beetle there is just a covering of clear plastic glued over the metal door that seals the door, and moisture,  from the interior trim panel.

I am restoring a '56 Plymouth Belvedere 4-door sedan. I have rebuilt all 4 door liners, and am ready to re-install them, but am not sure how to position the conical coil spring and washers. Q- Should the conical spring be positioned between the door metal and door liner, OR between door liner and handle/crank? does the wide end of the spring face outside or inside? where does the washer, or washers, go? thanks.
