? R 10 Overdrive unit ?

While in the overdrive mode, free wheeling will occur until the overdrive shifts. The shifting of the OD should happen when the car is about 28 mph or faster and the gas pedal pressure is for a moment released. In this gear, there is direct drive and the free wheeling action does not occur untiil the speed goes below about 28 mph. The above comments hold true for the R-10 overdrive.

Neil Ridle still has some of these books and will send one.
The free wheeling action was surpriising for me lats week: I had to go down a 2 descent part of the Autobahn and was surprised not to have a engine braking action.
The overdrive handle worked in time!
Well, I would have been surprised by the parking situation too...

Something to keep in mind when the car is in overdrive and you park it, is that unless the transmission is in reverse during parking, there will be no braking aid from the engine. When the OD is engaged at low speeds there is a free wheeling action that occurs. This same action also occurs during park. In reverse, the transmission always acts the same as any non overdrive thransmission.

Drove some miles , yes, bowden cable is needed!

The cable attaches to a lever on the overdrive part of the trans. Lever position determines if overdrive will be in use. A cable is the simplest way to move the lever. If you wanted to be creative, you cold figure out some electrical unit to move the lever. When the lever is in one position, overdrive will not work. Only in the other position will the overdrive and the electrical parts of it work. It would be worth the time to read some of the operation of the O D.

I may be wrong on this, but I believe that you NEED the Manual Cable in case the electrics go bad. Without the manual cable, you won't be able to shift into Reverse if the electric parts malfuction, you'd end up ruining your transmission, or at least the Overdrive part. It's more of a Safety item, then needed.

George Asche sent me a beautiful R10 overdrive / tranny set.

Now it finally is in (for 2 weeks, the shop had no time slot for me).
George put a bowden cable plus control grip too.

In the service manual, I found the electrical way of actuating the OD.

For my understanding, the actuation by hand via the bowden cable is optional.
I would prefer to control the Overdrive only by a switch.
Can I leave the bowden cable or is it obligatorially needed?
