Hello Plym 46,

Thanks for you answer , I think indeed that the oilpump must be rotated 1/4" anticlockwise ..
it is strange that i can't find anything in the manual about the position of the vacuum advance unit ..

So if anybody has a picture of it that would be graet!

not 100% sure where the diaphragm should be on a 40, but from pics I have seen its usually on the bottom.  Does your dist have a secondary sloted attachmet point under the body???  The later ones did which give a greater range of ajustment than just the slotted area of the hold down.  It basically the bolt that holds the mounting bracket ot eh dist body.

If it has one you can usually use it to put your dist in a position which gives yo more adjustment with the mounting bolt.

Many times during a rebuild the oil pump will be istalled indexed incorrectly, but this is not a big deal.  The factory position should have the rotor at teh 7 oclock position when cylinder 1 is at tdc.  so pull the spark plugs and withthe car in neutral, rotate the engine by hand till you feel pressure building while holding a thumb down on number 1 spark plug hole.  when you feel the pressure build then you can use the timing mark on the crank pully to put the pisto at TDC.

Now you can check the rotor position.  If its correct and you have the secondary hold down you can rotate the dist body to clear your obstructions and then use that cap tower that alligns with the rotor for the lead for spark plug one and then arrange the proper firing order aroud the cap.
if its pointing to a diffferent position you can do the same thing with the secondary hold down using what ever cap tower is closted and then rewiring the other spark plug leads as per the firing order.

Doe that make any sense???

Helllo Guys ,

I have a question about the position of the vacuum advance unit on the distributor .. When i recieved the Plymouth the vacuum unit was positioned right under towards  the dipstick , the problem i noticed was that the greasenipple obstructed the minor adjusting bolt  .... Now i turned the whole ditributor 180 degrees but now i noticed that the vacuum unit is touching the Oli filling tube ..
When i pull out the oil filling tube , i can adjust the engine timing perfect but than the filler tube won't fit any more....  What is wrong with that engine ?  the only thing i can imaging is that the oil pump is in a wrong position .. an I correct?
What is the original position of the distributor and vacuum advance unit ?
Maybe a few pictures wil help me, to solve this problem

thank's ! Paul
