Sending units still works after tank installation. Hurray!

I ended up using a little vaseline.  I first installed the hose to the tank and had to quit for the day. I turned the hose around and refit it on the tank. The end that had been on the tank overnight was a tiny bit stretched and fit on the filler tube much easier.

Fuel proof hose is stiff.  Try some WD 40 as a lubricant - if any gets in the tank it will probably evaporate, and any left will burn.

The tank has been boiled out at the radiator shop so there are no fumes. I have the sending unit out on the bench and I will work on it there. The toughest part has been trying to fit the tight gas hose between the tank and the filler tube. No leverage.

i have to agree with john , i wouldn,t attempt to solder it while it was still attached to the tank

I have my gas tank straps repaired and I just received the new bolts. I will install the tank and try to solder the wire to the existing screw, which is stuck in its threaded hole. If it works, great. if not I will try to get a replacement sending unit.  Thanks for the inputs.

I would take it off the tank prior to soldering - but i am just cautious

when you say the screw will not come out which one are you refering to , if it is the one that helps hold the unit to the tank , don,t worry about it , just replace the wire under one of the other screws,its there to earth the unit to the tank. if it,s the wire that attaches to the actual unit and, seeing as how it is working , i would clean the screw or whats left of it and solder a new wire on to it.    Rex

If yours is working I would find a way to re-use it.  The units out now are very unreliable, and most need modifications to work or fit in our tanks.  JC Whitney has them, and others sell them on Ebay and such.  But speaking from experience, I have purchased probably 4-5 over the years until I found one worth keeping, I would keep your working one.

I have a working sending unit but when I removed it to repair the gas tank, the screw that the wire attaches to will not come out and and I may as well buy a new sending unit. Anyone have a source the recommend? Thanks, Scott
