Hi Glenn, My car is a 28 Business coupe. I restored it myself in 1998. I did all the body and painting myself and the car did take a 2nd national place at one of the Plymouth Owners Club meets. It is all laquer. I don't know if laquer is available any more but I'm sure you can prep and spray it yourself with plenty of time and patience. As far as the color, you can make it whatever color you want. No one has ever told me that a color mattered when being judged. However I did stay with the dark blue and black fenders and trim with the gray pin stripiing all over the body as it was when new. Even the spokes on the wheels are striped.  The business coupes are a very rare body style as I don't think that many were produced in any year. More for the salesman or doctor. Not the family man. Let me know if you need more info. I'm in Ohio. Email me at

paint is what you like and are used to shooting..cost can attribute a bit also..personally I would use a good single stage acrylic enamel..other will probably recommend yet another product..it is all about what you want..and as you stated..you will do the paint yourself, surely you have a favorite system..go with what you have the best luck/most experience

Thanks guys, how about is this color right, and the combination, true to the 29 Plymouth? Should it really be re-painted? I reckon I will do the paint job myself in the spring, I just need your advice on the paint, I don't want to screw it up completely. lol  I have painted a number of cars so I am pretty fair at it.. It isn't going to be a show car, but a car I am not ashamed to drive when and where I want..... Does anyone use Clear Coat on the old Plymouths?

thanks
Glenn

The price of a paint job is nearly always based on the cost of materials and the number of hours labor spent on the job. I happen to live in a town where there are three well know paint shops that only do classic car restoration. One of the shops won't even take jobs that are not top-of-the-line classics that sell for several hundreds of thousand dollars. I don't think they do paint jobs that are less than $30,000. They recently did a rare Corvette for about $40,000 but the car sold at auction for over $200,000 so the investment was probalby worth it.

Another shop in town focuses more on cars like ours. Even their paint jobs run in the $10,000 - $30,000 range. If you want your car disassembled, paints matched, proper undercoats, correct overspray patterns, filliing and sanding multiple coats of paint, buffing, etc. you will pay for the time it takes.

If you want want a fresh coat of paint, Macco is currently running a $249 "Presidential Paint Job" special.

So, "What is a good price for a paint job?" is a hard question to answer.

Tell me guys, look at my avitar, maybe my car does not even need painting? Is this color combination true to the 29 Plymouth? The paint is good on the car, just doesn't look right to me. Thanks,
Glenn

Hey Gary, Thanks for the info. I have been checking that site, it is real good. The problem I am having is finding the color combinations???? Yes, I want to keep it as original as possible, the car is in good shape, it is ready to be painted. There is no rust, none of the wood is rotted, no dents or gouges...

DON'T GO To MACCO. They promised me the world when I had my car painted. I had to bring it back because it is a two tone paint job. They did not get the lines right. They fixed that. After two trips back. About a year and a half later the paint started to crack on the roof. I brought it back and I was told it was my fault because I used a car cover and water was trapped under it. Mind you the roof is not rusting the paint is cracking. When I asked if this means that Macco paint can't get wet, he told me there is nothing they could do unless I wanted to pay to get the roof sanded and repainted. Since then I am noticing paint cracking in other places.. I no longer use a car cover since I have the car in the garage.

I paid $4000 for a top quality job. There was one patch panel put in and it was stripped to bare metal. This was done by a body and paint man that was doing work on the side. There are other guys that do very good work in this area that are about the same price. I'm in Michigan. I think $10,000 is pretty high. I hope you find someone in your area. Good luck!

I was also given a quote of $10,000 for a paint job from a guy that is know to do top quality show car work. I think MACCO gave me a quote of about 1/2 that price.

I assume you get what you pay for. I'm thinking that unless I decide to do it myself (which is highly unlikely as I have neither the tools, facilities, nor experience), painting my car will be left to the next owner.

I don't know where you guys get your cars painted, maybe I will have to leave SD to get-r-done.
lol  I planned on doing painting myself next spring, because my garage isn't heated good enough to do it this winter  but I was getting in a hurry so I tryed the Ford garage in town here, their body shop wouldn't even take it on for no amount.  So I tryed one of the better body shops in town, that I take my personal vehicles to... They wanted $10,000.00 .  I reckon I will wait for spring and do it myself, ...............  Does this amount of money sound a bit far off base, or am I just imaginating it. Just currious to see what should be the going rate. I realize different problems and quality of the job mean something. Or did the guy just not want to do it...
