I agree with Carla. Your problem is most likely the wheel cylinders. I have a 55 Plymouth. Since it is not a daily driver moisture builds up in the wheel cylinders and they rust. Even if the car is in the garage the moisture still builds up. The last time I changed the wheel cylinders I had the brake system flushed and filled with silicone brake fluid. That was 3 years ago, so far no problems. Silicone brake fluid is supposed to keep moisture from forming.

my mechanic, who is helping restore the car that has been in storage for years,  says they have been on the car so long, that they are locking up and he suggests I get new ones.
Is he right?  Where can I find them, leads, referrals, appreciated.

Hi, Jerry,

Sticking brakes can be caused by rusty drum surfaces, to be sure, but the most likely cause is rust in the wheel cylinders which won't allow the wheel cylinder pistons to retract as they should.

Have the wheel cylinders off, clean them, and touch them out with a hone, gently. If they are noticeably rust-pitted, they must be sleeved or replaced.

Unless the brake linings are getting too thin, you can re-use them, and the drums, by cleaning/de-glazing them. New brake return springs are a good idea.

cheers

You should be able to find a local brake and clutch place that can rebuild the shoes with new material.
