Is mileage 34,000 or 134,000?

As you say, its hard to tell.  My 40 Plymouth Coupe in 1967 had 7,496 miles on it when I bought it.  I didn't think the car had been around the loop, so to speak, but surely had more than that mileage.  The car over all was in darn good shape and still is today.  In 1967, when I started driving the car, I set the speedometer to 34,000 miles.  Today it has 72,000 miles. Really doesn't make any difference in the milage as old as the car is.  But, the OLD PLYMOUTH is still going strong and hopefully will be for years to come. In 1967, I thought I paid too much for the car.  $600, yes, $600.  By todays standards, it was the buy of a life time.........  All, enjoy your Plymouth.   Ping

As indicated..the wear on the dash is quite extensive..but then you never know how someone may treat a car over the years...Iask the same thing on my 54 Plymouth as to if it was a 43000 mile car..I had door jamb service records from the mid 80's with the mileage just a couple thousand less than the odo...plus the engine paint was still in really good shape..I am thinking mine is but then it could easily been cruised past the 100000 mark prior to the 80's...just reallly no real way to know in my case..this was long before the truth in odometer statement on bill of sales and titles..

Well by looking at this one on my door jamb it was serviced in 1959 and had 31,500 at that time.

So how are the things that would imply long term wear such as the steering, kingpins etc. Is the engine original? If so, what condition is it in?

Or it could be something totally different. The speedometer could have been replaced, and I've read before that people would reset their speedometer to 00000 when they rebuilt their engine.

You never know.

From looking at the woodgrain on the dashboard, plus the missing (throttle?) knob, plus what may be an aftermarket choke knob, I would guess at least 134000, unless this car has never been garaged in it's life.

Good indicators are miscellaneous wear items like foot pedal rubbers, the paint on the shift lever right by the shift knob, the slop in the window winders and door levers.  How the key fits in the ignition switch.  the difference in the condition of the driver's side of the seat and the pass side. The play inthe steering wheel?  If everythig is nice and tight it could be the low one, i stuff is waorn and loosey goosey probably the later.

What do you think fellas, is the mileage 34 thousand or 134 thousand. As tight as everything is, doors, suspension and other componets I'm guessing 34,000.
