Hi and welcome. I have a 29 4 door and have been driving it around for a couple of years now. Fun car who everyone thinks is a Ford. Once you tell them it's a Plymouth they start paying more attention to the car because it is probably the first they have ever seen.

I am in the midst of a pretty hectic fall but I would like to see your car. (Looks great in your photo!) There is at least one other person in the local area who I think might like to see it too. You've found my web site http://www.ply33.com so you know what I know about your year car. If you look under the Miscellaneous section there is a page on "VIN numbers", in quotes because they did not have VIN numbers back then. That page explains most of what I now know about the FedCo numbering system. I will be replacing that page soon with an updated one but you can look there to figure out how to decode your FedCo style serial number into a straight numeric sequence and see where it falls in the production run.

Kim, Looks like it will be a great car. My 30U Business coupe was in storage from 1957 until 1980 and wasn't in nearly this good of condition.

With regard to the number change, I can't give you any better info.? Your new number of of RE-987-L only means that it was produced 2,000 cars later than earlier thought.

If you would like I can email you a copy of the Chrysler info that breakes down the Fed-Co system.

If you need some, I have what I would say are restorable hub caps with the big "P". Looks like from the picture you may still have tghe original raditor cap but can't tell for sure.

Tod: My daughter lives in Portola Valley and I go to visit her so maybe we can meet sometime; or if you ever come my way let me know...I would like you to take a look at my U-coupe. I went to the Galt Old Car Festival last week at McFarland Ranch. I can scan the program and send it to you if you want. Just another update on your cars numbers. According to my Plymouth Production records from Chrysler your car was produced as follows:

Your number RE-787-L was Produced between May 27, 1929 and June 14, 1929.

Records show RE-732-P (according to the old Fed-Co system this was 487,321) was produced on May, 27th, and RD-495-R or 494,954 was produced on June 14th.

Check ply33.com for more specs and info on colors.

I'm in Sunnyvale about 100 miles from you... p4jim is also in my general area (San Jose).

I assume you know that there is a fairly big car show in Galt each year. I haven't been there but I've heard good things about it. It was held on September 27 this year and is apparently organized by the Galt Area Historical Society http://galthistory.org/

Thank you Tod, Jim, and Bob. After I posted the note I did a little more digging in the internet lit and found that the engine number fit in the range for a '29. After looking at the engine again, it must be a U not a Q. Thanks also Tod for the build info re the "FedCo" number from the dash placque. I will post some pictures when I roll it out of the trailer it is presently sitting in until the new garage is finished. I had it painted purple and gold (high school colors...ugh) but it was originally green, with dark green trim and black fenders I think; does that sound right? I can still see some of the old paint where the newer paint has worn off and around the door jambs as well. Next I want to get the colors figured out 'cause I plan to return it to the original colors. When I was a kid, my family referred to the car as the "green hornet". I still remember that car come putting down our long drive when my grandparent came to visit us in Valley NE. Thanks again guys. Kim Mc

He will be glad to add your car to his list and is very very knowledgable.

The dash plaque has the serial number. The "FedCo" number you listed, RE-987-L, is for a model U Plymouth built in Detroit, the 48677th of 54628 built in that series of numbers.

If a "U" on the engine number, then it would be in range (between U999 and U110000). If it is a "Q" then the engine number appears to be out the range of numbers I have (Q175000 through Q242482).

Sorry, can't be of any help on the body number but maybe Jim Benjaminson can be.

I have a 28 or 29 3 window coupe that was handed down from my great-grandfather to my grandfather and finally to me at about age 12 (ca. 1954).? I drove the car in high school until 1957 when my family moved and the car was put in storage where it has been since.? I recently brought it to CA and intend to begin restoring it.? The car is generally in good condition for its years.? I have been researching the various car numbers and have run into problems matching the car numbers with the literature I've been able to find.? I figured I could get some help here.

Dash placque:? RE987L? ? (I've looked at these with a magnifying glass and I'm pretty sure this is correct)

Engine Number:? Q57210? (The Q could be a U and there seems to be a digit missing according to the lit but I think it is a Q.? The head also has Silver Dome and the numbers 301074-2)

Body Number:? 322-15644 (numerals are pretty legible on this too).
