Try spraying the cable with Moovit penetrating liquid. It might take a couple of treatments and a little patience, but I  think it will work. I freed a completely frozen steel in steel fitting that had been immersed in tidal water for who knows how many years - and sitting exposed to seasonal weather for years after its bath.

Bob thank you for the information, I'll look them up.  Rex, so it's sealed I was afraid of that... I'll take it out and soak it, do you know if it has to be greased up after or just reinstall the cable?  I'll hunt around for a source for the cable and see if I can find out who might handle them. Thanks again for all the help...

    the cable does not come apart like a speedo cable, my suggestion is to remove the cable, its probably gunked up with 70 years of crud, and soak it in a containor of kerosene for a couple of weeks . 39 was the first year that Chrysler used column shift , and the last year for this system , so no other year will fit . my 39 DeSoto has the same cable , it took me weeks of soaking to make it work . if you come up with a suppler of new cables , i would love to know

I was hoping someone would know about how this cable works and give me an ideal on how to get this cable a part in order to drive the car, I can only grind it into gear since it takes to long for the cable shift button to pop up... Is this a rare car.

Hello, my 39 plymouth P8 is slow shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. I noticed that the (remote control gearshift cable) button is slow moving up preventing me from shifting normally. I had the car on a lift yesterday and see that I have to remove part of the floor to gain access to the upper tranmission area. I take it that the cable needs lubed or serviced, is it like a speedometer cable that can be removed or what do I need to do in order to fix the problem. The Plymouth shop manual is no help. It takes 5 to 7 seconds for the button to pop all the way up so I can shift into 2nd gear. Also if it can be removed and lubed what is the best product to use.
