4 cyl water pumps

I have two spare water pumps that I found in my parts boxes.

One is like the one on my car, fully enclosed and with sealed bearings. I had the one on my car rebuilt by Friction Supply in Damascus, OR. and am going to have this one rebuilt as a spare.

The second one has an open area in bottom of the housing with a removable cover and a grease fitting which apparently greased the shaft and bearings. Can someone tell me what engines used this type pump and when they changes to the sealed bearing unit?
