Thanks for the advice, my car is getting its third coat of paint today. As soon as I get it back the first thing I want to do is to install the windows, I'll let you know how it goes, thanks again.

My weatherstrip cross section has one body channel, one glass channel and one retainer channel. While having the round retainer strip (kind of rubber rope) removed out of its channel, the inner lip between retainer channel and glass channel was easy to bend open and to accept the glass, Help with a plastic wedge to work the lip over the glass. Most of this does the rope.No tape needed, the seal didn?t try to fall out on to the hood. Anyhow, put a good cloth an panel and hood! When the glass is in place, the "rubber rope"

If You have time surplus, You can do it in a couple of hours: studying, buying material, trying the saelant, trying the process in dry and laten with sealant etc. A professional help will do in half an hour.

  Go Fleiter, Did you have to tape the seal to the car till you got the glass to hold it in place, did the seal on the oposite side keep falling away from the car?

I have put windshields in my self.  But the last one was a little bigger than I could handle so I called around and found a mobile glass guy that was interested in old cars.  Took him about 5, maybe 10 minutes and was worth the $10 he charged.  I wished I had had his number years ago.  He had all the stuff, and the right sealant that doesn't form a permanent bond to the frame.  Just a thought.

Sealant between car and gasket plus between gasket an glass is mandatory! You will have rust and leaks if You don?t use sealant. I had both once.
The rope hint worked very well when I tried. Use rope with specified diameter, it will make it easier. Sealants are easily to be cleaned up after installation, try before to which consistency it will harden. Only mess would be the rope catching sealant. Therefore You need the help most.

I installed the gasket in the car first, as only than the rope will work right for the glass (don?t know however, if my 1951 gasket?s cross section setup is the same than Yours).

Has anyone out there installed a split window winshield gasket in a 41 plymouth. I'm getting ready to do it. Is it better to put the glass in the gasket first and then install on the car or install the gasket on the car, then put on the car. Should I use sealer on both the seal to gasket and gasket to car. I bought a split seal from steele products and the sealant they recommend. I'm thinking of installing both glass panels in the seal with sealant and have one person hold each panel of glass on the inside of the car while a third person laps the seal to the car. I was told that I SHOULD INSTALL A 1/8 INCH ROPE in the crack of the seal to keep the gap open and pull out the rope as you go around. I was going to use sealant between the body and seal.  Has anyone done this with no leaks? Can you pass on your secrets. Can it be done or should I hire this out?
