thanks Elmo. I wasnt sure when Plymouth raised the CI. If anyone is looking for a head, I am willing to sell it for what I paid - $20.00. I wont ship it though. I would think that the shipping would be more than the 20.

If the head came off a 1940 Plymouth the motor should be a 201 cubic " the same as your 36

I got both shut off valves off of the head. Took a while to free them up but, they are working now. I will be putting them in soon. I took a look at the carb today and it needs rebuilt. The car they came off of has sat for about 40 years. I then realized that its different from my 36 because of the way the throttle crosses the head. I believe it is also a bigger bore. I checked the starter out by placing a set of jumper cables on it and it turned over and spun!

Great information. So the part was cast with a general number then it was assigned a seperat number once the macning was completed. Did I get that right? Were could you find the numbers thatwere stamped? I know that the head came from a plymouth, 1940 2 Dr sedan. I just wasnt sure what size motor. Thanks

I forgot to post the numbers on the head - 1120804-4. Anyone?

1120804 is likely to be the part number for the raw casting with a different number assigned for the finished head after machining operations.

At least that is how they did things in the manufacturing company I worked for 35 or so years ago. Every step on the creation of a finished item had a drawing identified by a part number so you could view the manufacturing process as transforming one part into another by machining or assembly operations. Only the final part that was sellable was put in the parts catalogs. I was fresh out of school at the time and have not worked in a similar area since, but it was my impression that the methodology was similar in other big US manufacturing companies.

CG Sailor-

I checked the 23rd edition of Hollander's Interchange Manual.

The closest number I could find is 1120796, which is listed as being for '37-48 DeSoto, and some '37-53 Dodge trucks.

Hey guys, great advice. I bought the head for 20 dollars and came with two shutoff valves. One was on the head the other on the neck. Have them soaking in oil right now. I also picked up the starter, generator and a Ball & Ball carb. I was think that it would be wise to do so.
Pat  that was exactly what I was thinking when I got the other parts!

I have a shut off valve (also from the same auto supply store's truck heater parts catalog) installed on the head.

I have an opertunity to buy a head for a L6 and a starter. The guy wants $25 for the head and $20 for the starter. Both are off a 40 plymouth and the guy is street rodding the car. I dont need them but want the water neck for my heater to connect. My 36 has a dealer installed heater and I havent found were they installed the second hose. I have one coming from the head and nothing on my water neck. The starter I thought about picking up for an extra. What do you think?

A pretty typical way to route the heater hoses in the early day was to put a fitting into the radiator hose. There are fittings made specifically for this and I was able to find one in stock at "my local better" auto supply store a few years ago. Have them look in the old paper catalogs for truck heater parts.

My thoughts on this:

If you run across any pre-war MOPAR parts, and they are priced reasonably, and you may need them SOME day, you'd better buy them and stash them while you still can.
