balancer on the crankshaft

Last Year there was some posts on Balancer topic.
Did anybody save the old board topics and can help Edwin?

I'm told that if you want the crankshaft alive, put a balancer on it. This will eliminate the vibrations in the crankshaft and prevent it from cracks.
Question, is this a must (on a V8)
If you use a balancer, what kind should you use (I have a 1955 P27 260 cu.in. V8 engine).
