Body Mounitng Stud for '41

Dear mvair, I?m not skilled with metallurgie!
I just know of weakening steel structures by unsuited zink plating methods. We are not allowed here to zink plate frames without an expert?s structural survey and permission.
I know from own experience with boat quality stainless steel bolts, that they are amazingly weak. They stand much less footpounds than steel.
Than I know that You always must beware of contact corrosion with different metals. The beautiful 60ies Lancia Flaminia bodies by Carozzeria Touring (aluminium on steel tube scaffolding) suffer this enormously.
  Maybe You should ask a restauration firm?

For the life of me I can't understand how I missed this topic.
My '39 Plym conv had the same shoulder stud in the hump over the rear axle. One of the studs broke when it was removed, I had a machinist make up a pair for my car, while he was at it he made up four extras, which I still have. The studs I have were made out of grade 8 quality steel....Bill

From what I understand, the shear resistance of stainless steel is not totally defined, since the way it behaves under stress is very different from steel. I guess there have been new shear studies to develop engineering standards. I don't know if any of these studies apply to stainless steel rod. What is your understanding?

I was somewhat considerate of the possible differences. I put the new stud in the rear corner of the body and replaced all of the standard mounting bolts (one of which is just a few inches away in the trunk) with new grade 8 bolts (a total of 8 new bolts in addition to the other six mounting studs for a total of 14 attachment points).

I would be interested in more information and your thoughts on this solution.

mvair, well done machine job. You surely have considered strength and shear resistance of stainless steel vs. steel. If less strong, put it in the least stressed place of all. Greetings! Go

I had no luck finding an original on short notice, so I took DANiel's advice and had one made a local machine shop. As you can see, it is a perfect match...and even in stainless steel. The cost of $20 seemed reasonable.

I sent the body mounting hardware for my car out for replating. When I got it back, one of the studs (shown below) was missing. The company raked their tanks but could not find the part.

Does anyone have one of these available? I need it soon as the body is ready to go back on the chassis.
