Old Paint Codes - New Paint

Acrylic Urethane is available as a single stage (i.e. no clear coat) paint.  The PPG brand name is Concept DCC.  PPG also makes a single stage Acrylic Enamel. The brand name is Delstar DAR.  Both of these options are more top of the line paints. The DCC runs about $238 a gallon and the DAR is about $170 a gallon.  Lower quality paints are also available.  I have been told that the Urathane is a harder paint and has a smoother finish with more shine.  I have also been told that it should not affect judging.  Any opinion about this from a judge would be appreciated.

I would like to know if the lacquers were ever applied at the factory...or if these paints were for repair shop use.  Any one know?

I have had trouble finding the mixing codes for Airwing Gray (30003) from any website or dealers.  The PPG computer shows the codes for some industrial paints only -  not for DCC or DAR paint.  Someone posted on this site a couple of years ago the ability to get paint codes.  I noticed on the old board however that several requests for paint codes were never answered.  Autocolor library said they could match the paint to the color chip... but no codes were available.

I too would like more information on this subject.  My attempts to get information on DuPont products have been fruitless.

Urethane (non-clear coat) should be ok if color is original - correct me if I am wrong - Urethane is available to use without clear-coat and once it is on the car, it can't really be detected.  The major problem with base/clear is that the extra depth of finish is obvious - what the goal is to look like original - a 1953 Plymouth did not have a two foot deep shine when it left the factory.

Thanks Jim....I assume the same goes for Urethane paints?    Lacquer and Enamel are the only two accepted as "original"?

Ahah....I found the earlier post by MVAIR.....that answers question one......"Formulation".? ? ?I guess the remaining question still is "How are the new paints judged at shows?"? ? ?Does a base coat/clear coat or urethane paint reformulated in say PPG still meet the standard of "original"?

What's the best method to take an old Plymouth paint color ..... say New Brunswick Blue ...... and reformulate it using one of the new paints that are available and still be able to honestly call it New Brunswick Blue?? ? I would like the color to be "original" but I would like to use one of the new formulated paints.? ?Second, does this newly reformulated New Brunswick Blue still qualify when being judged as "original"?
