No expert on Dodge trucks, however the 1948 Plymouth cars used a two wire sending unit that is totally different than that needed by either 53cranbrook's car or my 1933. I don't recall when they started using the two wire thermostatic unit, maybe 1939 or so but they used it through 1948. Then in 1949 Plymouth cars switched to the single wire unit 53cranbrook needed. Don't know about after 1954 as that is all the newer my factory service manuals go.

Your service manual will tell you the type of sending unit you have and how to check the system out to determine what components are not functioning properly.

Good question. I did this for my 53 and a few customers cars. Most were from the early 50's. If you have a single wire unit on your truck there is probably a unit with the correct ohm ratings to fit. What you will need to do is find the ohm ratings for empty and full for your particular vehicle. Now, go to the Whitney site and see if there is a unit that falls in or close to your needed range. Then have a look at Tod's site and just follow the instructions for the modification. Since I did this for my car and just a few customers I really had no need to obtain the ohm reading for all cars. But I do know that there are a number of different ohm rated units made by this company that makes the ones on the Whitney site. These are also available from most recreation vehicle parts stores. Do some research and find what is needed. If you have questions post it here. Tod or I might be able to help. Tod did the math and worked out a unit that seems to work for his 33.

Hi guys. I see that you have been trying to contact me. I no longer use the 54plaza name as I sold that car and now have a 53 Cranbrook. Hense, the 53cranbrook name I am now using here. Anyway, I have the article Tod is writing about. I did it on my personal car as well as a few customers of mine. This unit is bullet proof and I have been using it for years in motor homes. Let me know where you want the article sent and I'd be happy to see that you get a copy along with the photos.I think Tod is going to put it on his web site so it will always be avail there. In our region newsletter Bob Amos had an article about pieces from a universal fit sending unit and his original sending unit to make a new unit for his 1953. I think the 1953 and 54 use the same general mounting flange and same range of resistances, so what he did might work for you.

Anyone know where to get a quality sending unit for a '54 Savoy sedan? I bought one less than a couple years ago, and it's already dead; the cone around which the wire is wrapped has broken off at the base. I had two old units that had the same damage. Where can I get a new one? The car is still 6 volt pos. ground. Thanks, Chris
