Just a follow-up. After a few applications of penetrating oil, a little light fibrating with a small hammer, and keeping the puller torqued up, the steering wheel came right off.

If you pull the steering wheel, take note of the "master" spline, a gapped spline at 12 O'Clock on the steering wheel and the matching gap on the steering shaft tube.

The directional signal mechanics were pretty grungy. I cleaned everything and reassembled with a dab of lithium grease. Mechanically, it works much better. Electrically, though, I've still got something amiss.

Now I have only the left stop light and no directional signals. So, I guess that will be tomorrow afternoon's activity.

Hello Brian,

Thanks for the good info. You are correct on the technique and thread sizes.

It's a pretty simple setup, but I am letting some pentrating oil soak in, as the wheel doesn't want to release just yet, and I'm afraid to apply too much pressure to the puller.

The directional signal lever still works OK, so I'm expecting to find some worn insulation in there.

Cheers,

David

David:

If the signal switch is integral (factory supplied) you do need to remove the steering wheel to service it. The wheel is quite easy to remove once you have removed the horn ring, or button, as the case may be and have exposed the end of the hollow steering shaft.
Remove the horn wire from the ring/button assembly and push the end just below the top face of the steering shaft - but be careful that you can fish it out afterward! Hold the wheel against the torque of the wrench and remove the retaining nut from the top of the shaft. Now, if you are lucky (unlikely) you can pull up firmly on the wheel while gently trying to rocki it from side to side. WARNiING - read the last paragraph before you try removal - I added that as an afterthought, but it's important if you want to make replacement easy. The wheel may come off. If not, you will need a small two-leg puller with a forcing screw in the centre and a protector to place on top of the steering shaft to protect the threads, I keep a u-joint cup with my steering wheel puller for this purpose, but a very heavy flat washer will do. Use two bolts - 5/16 UNC I think - to attach the puller to the wheel using the tapped holes provided for that purpose. The wheel should come off quite easily, but if it does'nt use your favourite penetrating oil around the splines and wait for it to do its work.

I don't remember - if I ever knew about the 55 - but there may be a blind spline that makes replacing the wheel a no- brainer. But, just to be sure, witness the wheel/shaft relative position before you remove the wheel.

Hello,

My Savoy is flashing the left turn signal constantly, regardless of the signal lever position. It's a stock 6V system. The lamps and flasher are all OK, and I suspect it is the switch. Does anyone know if I need to pull the steering wheel to service and/or replace the switch?

Thanks for any help.
