Thanks to all who responed. And Pete I did go  ;Dto your site and I really like your button in the shift knob, If I can get an overdrive put in I'm going to do the same thing. Also your web site is GREAT, I found it while doing a search on 50 Ply's when I was looking to buy one. I did buy one and I'm having fun with it. Keep up the good work, Thanks, Wayne

Does anyone here know if a 53 Ply. tranny with overdrive will back fit to a 1950 4-dr., P-20. It seems I read somewhere that Ply. did offer it late in 1950 as an option. Thanks for any help. Wayne in sunny FL.

Wayne-

I'm running a '55 Dodge overdrive in my '50 Plymouth four door.  It's an R-10 unit, and as mentioned, is a direct bolt in swap for the stock three speed.  There are variants in the R10 transmission/overdrive though...  Mine came with a long input pinion shaft, for a V8 or Fluid drive (not sure which).  I had to swap the shaft for the correct length to use the transmission on my car.

You can read all about my transmission and it's rebuild on my site, www.50plymouth.com

The R10 overdrives were installed in Plymouths from 1952 through 1956.  The 56's have 12 Volt systems.  These overdrives can be installed in the Plymouths that have column shift (not floor shift).  They are a bolt-in replacement.  This only exception is the cars with a shorter wheel base.  (I had to shorten the drive shaft on my 1952 business coupe.)  Then you have to shorten the drive shaft by 7 inches.  You then have to acquire the electronic parts to make it work, relay and switch and then the overdrive engage cable.  The hardest part is finding a R10 overdrive.  Good luck.

I completed a George Acshe O.D. mod. in my 40 Ply. P-9 2 weeks ago and I love it. At 65 MPH the engine sounds like it's turning at 25 MPH. Since I'm planning a Route 66 trip soon, I feel it was the single best thing I have done to my otherwise restored to original P-9. All my concerns about lack of power, rear end ratios, etc. etc. have been layed to rest.

The later overdrive tranny will fit into older Plyms back at least to 1946 without any modification of the drive line.?
The guru of Borg Warner R10 overdrives is George Asche of Venus, PA.? Phone is 814-354-2621?
If you ever call, be prepared to chat a while. :)
