Did this with 50's type items last fall.

the posting below reminds me of something.
my grandfather farmed his grandfather's land all his life (1902-84), but he never had a pickup truck until the 60's.
when I was young there was a strange crate in one of the barns, made up of 1x3 boards it- was about 40" tall, 48" long and 16" wide.
he told me when cars had running boards, he would strap that crate on and haul a calf to market.

OK, Bob, here is a one-up ! My father carried a young bull calf standing in the back seat floor area of his '40 sedan, with me sitting on the seat holding its halter. This would have been in 1958. The car was near the end of its working career so he didn't care that the calf pretty well destroyed the rear carpet. As for me, he was confident that any bruises would heal. I sure as heck did not let loose of the rope.
He also carried rock salt in the trunk and some of the residue mingled with the wires that go to the tank sender resulting in the gauge reading 1/4 when the tank emptied out. When I bought the car from him in 1959, it took a lot of work to undo the damage inflicted on it. Then that poor old P10 had to suffer the abuse that only a teen aged driver can dish out.
My present 40 leads a charmed life in comparison......... they are truly great cars.

I have attached a photo that I took this summer using the trunk of my business coupe.

My wife and I were delivering some day lillies to some freinds of ours.

So you can see, you can take the kid off the farm, but you can't take the farm out of the kid.

This is off the subject, but when I read Dave's posting it reminded me of my Grandfather. The had a 1951 Plymouth 4dr that he use to take the back seat out to haul a bull calf that was in a burlap feed bag to the auction. I can also remember him hauling his milk cans full of milk to the Sealtest milk factory that was in our little town, then we would stop at the GLF to get bags of feed. It was just something that the farmers did when I was growing up, use their cars as pickup trucks.

The 40 sedan has a good sized trunk but have you ever looked into the business coupe's? As Bob mentioned, advertising and tools that are correct for the period make good displays. Farmers like me can tell you that Milk churns will stand in the trunk. We carried a newborn calf a short distance in my 40 sedan , lid open. In my present 40 , a business coupe , I have carried hay bales and bagged manure, not good choices for a car show or a show car. Portable radios which weighed about 50 lbs were pretty rare in 40, you might be lucky enough to find one. With the business coupe it was also possible to carry a couple of friends into the drive in movie. I am certain the law takes a dim view on this but it did not seem to matter back in the 60s. Then there is the "Trunk Monkey" a very useful accessory. If you are not familiar with it, try a google search.

I know of people that dispay the tools that came with the car, along with framed ads from either " The Saturday Evening Post" or "Life" magazines.

I have also seen picnic baskets and coolers displayed.

I have a couple framed 1940 Plymouth ads, along with a 1942 Green Lucky Strike ad that I display with my car

I lean them up against the front bumper,

??? My replacement 1940 P10 4 door sedan trunk mat got soiled and I was thinking of getting another replacement.... The other thought I have Its a big trunk and what period correct items could go there ... If you have any suggestions I would appreciate that .. I am only looking for period correct items thanks ...
