53 coe  all paint wll crack eventually on rubber unless it has had an addative added to it to make it flexible and able to move when the tyre flexs , i dont know what they call it in the US , but here in NZ it is called flexiadd it was developed to paint the rubberised  bumpers and other parts on modern cars. when painting tyres i would say you would have to add more than when painting bumpers etc. apart from that i can remember back in 1959 -60 you could buy a white wall tyre paint ,i can recall painting the tyres on my 38 Dodge with it , its awhile back, and my wife reckons i sometimes suffer from "oldtimers disease"but from what i remember it seemed to last alright

Currently being restored.

Is that a couple of photos of a Plymouth wagon?

If so what year and would it be possible to see a frontal view of it?

Thanks,
Bob

I have to say, it didn't work :(, I did get all 4 painted and put on car and went for short test run. The tires I painted with out any air in them cracked before I got it out of the drive way, about 80'. The others that I painted full of air did a little better, maybe 2 miles with cracking. I e-mailed the guy that sold me the paint and he said there had to be something still in the tire, maybe tire dressing or something not letting the paint bond to the tire. He did send me a new can but I don't want to redo these tires. Maybe I'll look for some port-a-walls. Wayne in COLD FL., it went down to mid 40's last night.

As an addition to what i have just said i am a great believer in not hiding things away in museums, and to use them as they were intended to be used(not abused) when they were built   ,that iis why i have fitted the portawalls to my car.

I have a set of portawalls fitted to my 54 DeSoto Diplomat (54 Belvedere ) and as Gonnacrash says they have to be fitted right , i have driven my car at up to 70 mph ( i know i shoudn't) and have had no problems with them flapping . as an aside they came out in different colors in the 50's,at least here in NZ . my car is painted a maroon color ( not original ) and the portawalls are a light blue. there is a pic of it posted some where on this site. i have seen them in white , blue and red . the set i have were given to me by a museum as surplus to requirement  as they have all the colors on display,

Thanks for the reply Don, I can remember riding in my dads car and seeing those port-a-walls flapping. I think it was around 1957-60. I haven't  seen any since., Thanks Wayne

Gonnacrash

Wayne & others,

I used the Port-A-Walls back in the late '50's, had a little flapper problem and a fellow at the
"filling station" showed me how to install them.
Slightly inflate the tire with the P-A-W installed, and press at the rim all around and force the
edge of the wall down into the bead, taking the 'curve' out of the P-A-W and making it lay
flat.   It worked really well.  I had some on a '55 Chevy and ... well... worked over 50MPH
let me say that.

I think this is what you were trying to do:

I think I got it now, this link should take you to all the pic's. ;D? Thanks, Wayne
  •

HOW did you do THAT-?, Thanks, I have been playing around with it. Did you "TAG" the pic. I could not not find a simple link from the folder to an e-mail, I was able to TAG a pic. and sent a link to my own e-mail as a test and it did work for the one pic. not the entire folder.  Thanks, Wayne  PS. I would love to hear from any members that used the paint back in the 50's, 60's. My neighbor is 79 yrs. old and he said as a teenager he painted his tires with barn paint and had to redo them every few weeks, he thinks my painted tires are great, LOL ;D

They look good to me!!

Wayne, I'm not sure why you can't seem the get the pictures going, if you describe what your doing, perhaps I can guide you better.

I can not get the link posted, but if you go to the photobucket site as listed in other response and type in 53coe, it will ask you if you want my post"53coe", highlight it and then open up folder "wide whites" and be sure to read the text on each pic. I still have not gotten all the tires on yet. When I do I'm going to go and TEST them hard, I'll post the results, thanks & Merry Xmas to ALL, Wayne

Hey Wayne, why not put the photos up for everyone?  If you don't have a www.photobucket.com account yet, get one, and upload your pictures to it.  Its 100% free.

Once your pictures are there, you can link to them on this message board.
Just click on the IMG Code and it will "copy" the HTML code to your clipboard:

Then all you do is copy that text into your message and your picture appears when you click preview:

If you picture is too big it will be stretched out.  Scroll down to the HTML code and in this example, you would change the line:
img width=800 height=768]http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff268/41woodie/DSCN2264.jpg[/img
img width=800 height=600]http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff268/41woodie/DSCN2264.jpg[/img

Hope I'm not hijacking the tread.  But pictures sure do help explain ideas and show off your results.  Thanks!

Thanks,? Did find his site, it sounds like he did his home work. I have all 4 tires painted, it was a learning experience. I don't think you could use a tire changer with out messing up the paint. I took a bunch of dig. pic's as I went along, if any one would like to see them, please e-mail me direct and I'll send them to you., As of today, I have one finished and mounted on the car. I had to stop due to extreme cold weather. I'm repainting the wheels also, so I have to let the paint dry. It has went all the way down to the high 30's here and I have no heat in my garage. But it's going to get warmer, back up to the 50's-60's in a few days. If I need new tires :) in the future, I'll just pay the extra for the wide whites. I have perfect tires and just didn't want to throw them out and the paint is truly OLD School. Thanks to all and Merry Xmas, Wayne in sunny but COLD FL.

I just got started on the white wall paint, sanded off the raised letters on the tires, I'm taking pic's as I go. If anyone wants to see the out come e-mail me direct and I'll send you some pic's. But only time will tell how they will hold up., I love the old achool stuff. Thanks, Wayne in sunny FL.

Thanks for the input. I did look at the thin white wall, the new tires were mounted so the thin white wall is on the inside, but on these tires the white wall is? raised up. I have a 59 Ford Skyliner that has wide whites ,it had? thin white walls and then the black was cut away to show all of the white wall. They look good at 6-10ft., but if you look close you can tell that they were cut, I didn't do them my self., I think the Port-A-Walls are neat, but not over 50 mph. I did buy the white wall paint that's on E-bay, I'll post the out come. I'm not going to cut the tire. Thanks again for ALL input, Wayne in Sunny FL. PS I did repair my gas tank sender, the cone shaped pc. with the coiled wire fell off, I made a fix for it, e-mail me if I can help.

Also suggested on another board.  Most narrow whites are actually 2 to 3 inches wide and are covered by black rubber to make them narrow.  The thin layer can be abradded away to expose more white.  Are the tires the correct size?  Taller tires can sometimes be used to correct some speedo/odo error.

Do not think  it is good idea to cut your sidewalls and white paint will not hold up very well on a tire. I do remember the porta walls which were a white rubber ring that were added to the tire to give a whitewall look. If it were my car I would check with coker or univeral tire and get a price for some new whitewall tires

53coe

Has any one used the white wall paint. I just bought a 50 P-20 that needs WIDE whites, but it has new tires on it. I think the painted tires would be correct for that time period, as I can remember people painting there tires. does any one have the machine that was made to spin the tire and cut a flat area for the wide whites. Also my 50 has a black shift knob and the door & window cranks have white, is that correct-?, does any one know where to buy speedo? gears, my speedo is of by 7-8 mph., Thanks, Wayne in sunny & HOT FL.
