Nice Car and a really nice picture.? ?As an FYI,? I have pointed many members to this forum as will as the POC.? What they do is their personal choice.? I believe in keeping the site about the cars and not about what members can or shouldn?t do.? I don't encourage or discourage.? What's right for one person is different for another.? One member has a 29 Plymouth with a modern motor and automatic transmission, he's welcome.? Another is hot rodding his 29, he's welcome as well as any original parts he wishes to sell.? ?It?s all about the cars & driving them not what one should or shouldn?t do with their vehicle.? It?s about enjoying the hobby and the fun of shade tree mechanics, as the Australians say ?No rules.., just right?.

Chet-- Everytime I find a Northeast speedo head on eBay, I get outbid. I don't want to pay more than $100 and the ones I've seen usually go for around $125. I've heard of other units going for around $75.

I bought a head in a package deal for $100 on eBay. From a '30 Dodge DA or DB I got a speedo head, ammeter, oil gauge and the 6 connector switch found at the bottom of our steering columns. The white faces on the gauges were perfect, almost NOS looking, and the glass excellent.

I sold the gauges to a fellow enthusiast in Norway for $160 and kept the switch for a spare and the head for parts. The head has a different shape to the face, everything else is identical. I hate to gut it, but I need the odometer gears and the housing for mine. The threaded "outlet" where the cable connector goes in is partly broken of. The squared end of the cable doesn't seat properly so the speedo reading is erratic, at best. Odometer is inop.

I've been dragging my feet performing my rebuild in hopes that I find a replacement unit and I can save the Dodge head and find someone who can use it. Afterall, it is not essential to the operation of my "U". These parts are hard to find in excellent shape and I hate to destroy the DA/DB unit.

Another thing, Chet, you should recruit some of your '28-29 website members to join the POC!

The post below is from May 2007.? I picked up the cable from ePay.? I don't remember what I paid but it wasn't too bad.?

Bob I have yet to get the car out of the garage.? Between the day job and home.., my time is limited.? I spent the last Saturday rebuilding the stock carb for my P15.? ? I would realy like to get her on the road by year end.? ?At least Mr Plymouth-guy had his car out.?

Yeah, speedo head issues. I bought a spare one and hopefully I can make her work.

I had my '29 out a couple weeks ago when we had spring weather for two days. The weather here has sucked for two weeks and is supposed to suck at least ten more days, so I put her back in.

I think my 6v battery is toast so I guess I'll run to Fleet Farm.

Hi Chet- Where did you locate the speedometer cable? I need one for my '29 Ply Coupe (North East late version). 59? 5/16 in. long for North East gauge. One end is square and the other end has 1 3/4 in. long "North East" style lug terminal. See photo below. Any one know of a supplier? Thanks - Rich? ::)

Jim,

I saw your pictures of the Fairfax show, Sorry I couldn't join you.? My only possible achievable goal this year appears to be Sully.? A couple of weeks out and I still have lots to do but so far I am staying on the time line.? Like I said the 29 will loose this long weekend because I will be out in Delaware working on the summerhouse & the 48.? It is tough servicing two mistresses, in two states?, but I can?t help myself.

What went right:

- The replacement transmission worked perfectly.
- The speedometer is working again thanks to the new cable.? Counting up from, 00,000.7? Like starting over again with a new car.? ?
- The motor again ran better then expected.? Strong and nock free.? On Church Road I got her up to around 45 without pushing 3rd. gear into high rpm's.? This seems to be a good cruising speed.? No temperature problems.? Radiator is cool on the bottom and middle and warm at the top.
- Replacement hand brake assembly working like new.
- Hydraulic brakes A-OK no more leaks after fixing the oil reservoir fitting.

What went wrong:

- After driving about 6 miles the fuel filter clogged up again.? The good news is that the level of dirt in the filter was about 80% less then the first time this happened.? I have 3 more of these cheep plastic gas filters maybe the next drive I can get double the distance.? I am contemplating dropping the tank or at least draining out the bottom gas.
- The oil pan gasket went completely south.? It was leaking and now it is like a steady stream of oil.? The good news is that I ordered 3 of these gaskets last week.? I expect them in the mail this week.? I had planned to clean out the oil pan anyway so this slightly unexpected problem is not a big deal.? Just cut my drive short.

What I accomplished:

- Aligned & hung the rear passenger door after removing the inner door molding and replacing the wood framing with a new frame strut which I made from a piece of oak.? Everything back together and now the door stays closed.? Kinda important.!!!? (Someday when the 48 is finished and I am retired I will remove the metal skin and completely redo the wood sub-frame.? It is a project that I will look forward to doing in the future.? I like working with wood, especially hard woods.? In the meantime I will have to just enjoy the car as is.)
- Removed all the tacky staples that someone put in the headliner and replaced them with black button tacks.? This looks 300% better then the staples.
- Replaced some screws holding the front seat back in place.? Now the seat doesn't wonder toward the back of the car while you are driving.
- Cleaned up the interior.? stained the floor front & rear.
- Put on the last of the 4 new tires.

I was so tired I couldn't drag myself upstairs to get the camera and take a picture.? Hopefully tonight I will drop the oil pan and get it ready for the new gasket.?
