Title: The "Wayback Machine"
Post by: RC Drown on April 06, 2011, 11:50:48 AM
A few photos that I would like to share, although I very seldom get many comments except from the same people.  Sometimes I get the feeling that members would rather snub their noses as the "Wayback Machine" is a driver and not a show car

My feelings and I surely don't mean to affend anyone.

Bob -

Your photos are great. I love the sepia tone look.

I always enjoy seeing your pictures. I don't comment often, but that is not a reflection of my interest. However, I do always appreciate comments when I post and will try and do a better job of giving you a sense there really are people out here interested in what you are doing. :)

Hey Bob,

Long live the Wayback Machine! The bottom photo is my favorite.

I just got home from helping my neighbor put new bushings in the rear suspension of his '99 Cadillac.

I bet you feel like you have a show car when you park your car in a parking lot and a people stat coming over and asking you a million questions. That and simple cruze-ins are what I enjoy most. I always get a good crowd at a rest stop or a Wal-Mart  parking lot. I Posted some pictures of my car on this sight and did not get a response like I was hoping for. Every one is in the club for a different reason and their all good reasons. Your pictures are telling us ( a picture is worth a thousand words) that you have a 1940 plymouth. flathead, that runs great. That information is valuable to the showcar people too. When we need technical information on keeping a flathead running its guys like you we all depend on.
Thanks and keep the pictures coming (that reassures us you know plymouths). Mike

Hay Bob,

You posted these pictures this morning and received 6 responses including this one.  The point being is that although there are a lot of registered members not everyone checks in on a daily or weekly basis.   Actually I have been pretty busy with a million honey do?s that I haven?t even been able to get back to working on my car.  This weekend will be filled with yard work, so maybe next, it?s been a month since I turned a screw on the 48.

The point being is keep posting those pictures they are always welcome.  On day I might be able to do the same but for now still trying to find the time to get the car back together and on the road.

I'm as guilty as anyone about not commenting on your photos but rest assured I very much enjoy see them (and Cooper too)!

I am particularly impressed that you take the Wayback Machine out in the snow. Even though my "Bluebelle" will never be a show car and my main enjoyment it taking her out for drives, I'm still too scared to take her out when the roads have been salted.

As a matter of fact, I had no pictures of her in the snow and thought one would be good for a future Christmas card, so I drove her out of the garage into the 6" of snow, took a couple of pictures, and backed her right back into the garage.

So... Keep enjoying your trips in the Wayback Machine and keep posting the pictures. They are very much appreciated!

BTW... I don't think I've ever seen a comment on this forum from anyone who looks down upon drivers nor praises show cars so I can't believe that is the motivation behind the lack of comments about your pictures, just sheer laziness on our part.

Don't ever feel that way Bob, I'm sure everyone enjoys the pictures and even if they don't I know you enjoy taking them and after all that's what really matters isn't it. Keep them coming.

Thanks for all the comments fellas.

Chet, My wife and I drove by the Roscoe Diner last week on our way up to the Utica area to visit her 93 year old Father, the parking lot was darn near full.

Jim, if the roads are wet shortly after a snow storm, i don't take the Plymouth out, but if the roads are dry, I do take her out and about, but usually wait a few days after a snow storm for the salt dust to get pretty much off the road.

Bob, I too ( as You certainly know ) like Your car - ad - dog shots in the wilderness.

This forum lost a lot of posters as of its former slowlyness . Problem is always:  the spare time of the protagonists is as rare as ours - as long as beeing still in jobs..

I visited Techno Classica oldtimer fair last weekend, and  a friend got me while starting back home onn the VIP (=oldtimer cars) parking. (besides is a Morris minor Station)
So, winter is over here also!

Took a 150 mile jaunt today and went by Delta Lake near Rome, NY.  the lake was originally impounded to provide water for regulation of the Erie Canal.  The original dam has been rebuilt a couple time last in the 20's or 30's, guessing the ridge over the outlet is from the same time.

Believe it or not, these photos are in Spring time here in the Catskills.  It has been a very cold wet Spring so far, the lilac trees are begiinning to bud as are the soft maples, but that is about it  Yesterday we had temps in the upper 70's, today back down in the 50's. overcast and windy

Pat,

Glad that you were able to get the '36 out for a spin yesterday,  Cooper and I put a few miles on the "Wayback Machine" yesterday also before the rain arrived in the evening.

Today it is very windy with temps in the low 50's with light drizzle, suppose to have a nice Thursday and Friday, but time will tell

We had over 70 deg. F on Sunday, today we had only 55. Too cold for convertible. As no rain and sunshine, today I made my trips in Peugeot 504 4dr. from 1978. Doesn?t get  out of the garage so much times, so I took the chance

Greetings and hoping for sun everywhere. Go .

Cooper and I were out and about this past weekend, my niece "doctered" these two photos I took, just had to share, plus I added one that I took by the water falls.

No old car driving weather since, very foggy and lots of rain, not to mention abnormal temps for this time of year

We have had upwards of five inches of rain since last Saturday, there was a lull in the rain yesterday, so I was able to get the lawn mowed before I had to ask a farmer friend to use his mowing machine........  We ended up having Thunder storms last evening, and today it has been rainless, but again, strong thunder storms are possible.  To make a long story short, Cooper and I took advantage of no rain today and went for a ride in the "Wayback Machine"

Bob-

The bottom photo reminds me of the (former) one room schoolhouse that I was living in when I married Diana. We moved out after 3 months; not enough room for her stuff & my stuff....in those days (1973) we had 9 (elderly) cars; 8 of mine and one of hers; whichver car started is the one that we drove...

Love Your postings, Bob!

We are  plymouthing in Austria?s Alps (Achensee - Tirol). Past Friday, on tour with some 30 other oldtimer cars and 4 weighty passengers in the Ply, I had to pause 10 minutes due to little overheating. Didn?t bring it?s usual performance nor ran properly.

Sunday I checked ignition etc: seems to run on 5 cylinders only (no diffference when taking # 5 spark cable off). Maybe some valve problem.
Can?t solve it here, so I drive carefully this remaining holiday week.

Makes easily its max speed (75 mph) comfortably, but lacks power in lower rpm in the mountains.

Will check valves plus rod bearings next week.

Sorry, can?t put pics here in the hotel?s computer.
so, some Links: Hotel site doesn?t show the perfect underground car garage (with electric plug for my batteries charger - I have 2 batteries, but only one can be charged by car generator)...

Go,
Not sure if you found the problem yet, so here is a coomment on what happened to me. I was driving my car at a higher rate of speed than I normaly do. When I stopped I noticed I had a miss in the engine. I found one of the cylinders was not firing. I pulled out the spark plug and found a piece of carbon lodged between the electrodes. I cleaned the carbon out put the spark plug back in. When I started the engine I had all 6 cylinders fireing again.
I hope your fix will be as easy.
Happy Motoring!

the spark plugs are the first thing i would check , change them round and see if it makes any difference to what cylinder is out , if it makes a difference the plug is faulty , if no change i would give it a compression test , to me it sounds like a blown head gasket.

Thanks, Boys, first thing will be compression test. I suspect a valve sticking in # 5 cylinder. Changed Spark plugs and tested spark on every cyl.

The "Wayback Machine" was laid up almost a month, while we replaced the pionion seal, inner and outer axle grease seals, real brake lines and both rear wheel cylinders.  So this morning Cooper, my wife, and I went for a ride up in the mountains to take these photos of a covered bridge that was built in 1860.  Just a nice ride on back roads in the "Wayback Machine of approx 30 miles round trip.

I hope everyone is having as great a day as I am,

About a month ago Cooper and I went for another ride to get these photos of another covered bridge located in Livingston Manor, NY.  This bridge was also built in 1860.  It is called the Van Tran Flats covered bridge.  Look at the way the bridge was constructed on the inside, made to last, that is for sure

Bill and Go,

Thanks for the positive comments, I really appreciate that.

There is another covered bridge about eight or ten miles from the one that I posted the other day.  If all goes as planned, I will get up there also this summer.  I could have went that same day, but wanted to make an extra trip out of it, that way giving Cooper and I more driving time in the "Wayback Machine" :)

Thanks again,

Hi Bob,
I always like your photos and if I not confirm my approval don't mean not to appreciate.
However I believe that it ould be a beautiful idea for you that you live in the country to introduce the photos of the car in the same places in the different seasons.
The snow in the winter, the flowers in the spring, the blue of the sky in the summer etc.
what do you think?.
To send a photo of city, nothing changes. The houses are always grey but you are in contact with the nature and it would be beautiful to share this beauty
Thanks always to share your emotions with us

Bob-

Our fall colors are pretty decent this year, but we need a hard frost. I was attacked by (biting) Japanese beetles, and tiny black (biting) bugs when I took clothes off the clothesline. They also munched on me while I was laying in our driveway, pulling the (oil) drain plug on the '36.

My wife and I took a ride south into the Finger Lakes region (Canandaigua) of NY state last week. I was surprised at how much better the leaves were down there. At the time we virtually had no colors at all up here by the big Lake (Ontario). Now a week later we're just starting to get some nice colors in the trees. Just like Pat said... We need a hard frost for the trees to change. On the other hand we're still picking tomatoes and zuchini...so it's not all so bad. Keep taking those photos Bob. I also enjoy them so much...

Thanks, Bob

Cooper and I have been out and about today, we reached and surpassed the 1900 miles driven this season with the "Wayback Machine two weeks earlier than last year.  Not bad considering she was laid up most of the month of June waiting for a pinion seal, and both inner and outer rear axle seals.  Most of those 1900 plus miles Cooper has been my Co-pilot and GPS unit. Gosh how I love that little bundle of fur!!!!

More beautiful photos Bob!...I see you got my favorite 'ol barn backdrop in there thank you...Keep 'em coming as I hear there's more nice weather in our forecast. Going to hit the mid-50's by week's end and will stay dry too :-) By now you have to have an all time record for miles in one season on the Wayback Machine huh??

Bob,

I have just over 2250 miles so far this season on the "Wayback Machine"  I would like to get atleast another 150 miles on her, that is my highest so far, but this is the fourth year in a row with over 2000 miles on her.

After I posted the first part, I went for another ride this morning, here are a couple of photos.  The white building was an old store/garage back in the 30's and '40's  Closed up when the reservoir was built in the late '40's and early '50's

Define coolness?   A digital camera, an old Plymouth, no time clock and - a really nice December here in the northeast!

Of course we paid a lot of weather-dues in September and October.   I'm still mucking out, though my issues were fairly minor.

Thanks for stream of pictures, Bob.  They're great.  I count the days to retirement...and try to make the most of my weekends!

Cooper and I took our first ride of the New Year this morning, didn't go far, but had fun at it.  Hard to believe that right now it is almost 50 degrees here in the Catskills of NY.  Before we went for a ride, I grilled some hamburghers, ah life is good, yes it is.

I sincerly hope that everyone is having as good a day as I am, Happy New Year to everyone,

in Google earth, I found a Livingstone Manor Covered Bridge, but that seems to be much less cared for.
That wasn?t Your place?

Always nice to see Your pics (and feeling someone still sustains the slowlyness of this server...)
Today, with 62 deg. F, I took off my additional 12V electric web (Radar alarm, quarter power window motors, MP3 Radio, GPS power)
and had a 16 Ah Gel- Battery 12 installed. I need it for the change to electric power steering. I have to reverse back several times to get into my garage, and my deteriorating right hand doesn?t like the heavy turning any more.

Afterwards, I can add everything to the 12 V Batt, until now I used a 6 to 12 V unit, which wasn?t reliable.
I will put a second generator under the original one, using one (longer) V- Belt.

Saturday I will go to the Techno Classica Fair at Essen (25 minutes in Plymouth), one of the biggest in Europe.
Greetings from D?sseldorf! Go

Wonderful to see these pictures. Can sense the satisfaction of these trips. You people are blessed I must say.

In India, whenever you go on drives people ask you some standard questions

1. Is the car petrol or diesel? (Diesel is about 35% cheaper than petrol)
2. What is mileage? (India is obsessed about mileage)
3. Are you selling? (In the absence of exposure people are trying to understand values of such cars)

Absence of discipline on the road is a major pain :-[. People keeping coming in your way trying to take pictures on their mobile camera's.

In the next few months we plan to do may drives in my 32 PLY PB and hope to add to this thread.

Cheers

I found out last week that I have stage two throat cancer.  I will have no surgery but under go six weeks of intense cemo and radiation treatments five days a weeks.  I have to be back up to Cooperstown, NY on Thursday for a series of tests that will take all day.  I figure that I also will find out when all the treatments will start.  I will have to have a feeding tube installed and a port for the cemo installed also.  The feeding tube is so that I will be able to eat as my throat and mouth will become very sore after the radiation treatments.  Who knows, I may even become a shadow of myself because of the feeding tube, which really isn't a bad thing as I am a rather heavy man.

Yesterday I went with my son, his wife and young daughter to Rhinebeck, had a great time.  I got to visit with Greg G, Mark D and Rich W who each had thier Plymouths there.  Today Cooper and I are going to add more miles to the "Wayback Machine" as it looks like the old thing is going to sit for a long time.  We are also looking for lodging in Cooperstown that will accept Cooper those six weeks.  He is as much therapy as a old, fat, bearded man can ask for.

Dam.n Bob,  (sorry sometimes an expletive is the only proper adjective)

I just checked in and found the news about the cancer.   I know you are going to beat this thing you just need to stay positive.  Follow you doctor?s directions and ask a lot of questions.  Never feel bad about getting a second opinion when it comes to your treatment.   Like fixing cars there are many ways to skin the cat.  I am not a religious man but did drop a prayer to the big guy to give you break.   Since I don?t bother him much maybe he will take note of the request.

Thanks Chet, I appreciate your thoughts and prayers.

We just got home from spending the day in Cooperstown at the cancer treatment center.  I started my first round of chemo treatments today.  In the span of five hours I had two different kinds of cemo, some steriods, a lasix, and some anti nausa medicines thru IV.  I have my third treatment of cemo hooked up right now being administered by a machine that I have in a fanny pack.  My says it is an infusion pump.  That will be finished on Friday afternoon when the county nurse comes to diconnect it.  Then I start the whole procedure over three weeks from today.  I shaved my beard off and got a haircut last week, so that way I could control what happened to my whiskers and hair, not let the cemo take it off for me.

Wednesday I have to be at a Cooperstown satellite station in Delhi for a shot to increase my while blood count as the cemo is going to radically deplete my imune system and the shot will make it not so bad.

I have the Plymouth parked in the garage as it is raining and suppose to rain for the next couple of days, but I will get it outside so that I can atleast look at her

Yesterday afternoon Cooper, Patty and I drove up to Parksville for ice cream. So I did get to enjoy all three of my loves yesterday:):)

Thanks Tom and Neil for the well wishes.  I completed the first of three rounds of cemo therapy Friday, start the next on June 11.

Monday I had two treatments of cemo via IV for a period of five hours, then around 3:30pm I was hooked up to the third bad a cemo that dripped.  The drip was monitored by a small pump.  We came home Monday afternoon and this pump/monitor had to stay hooked up to me until Friday afternoon.  So are so good, I am very tired, but otherwise doing good

My heart goes out to you and all your family. I guess we have more in common than old plymouths. I have had Multiple myeloma ( a bone and blood cancer for 14 months). The hardest thing about getting cancer is telling the ones you love that you have it. I still find it hard to tell someone that I have cancer who doesn't know yet , I hate to make my friends sad.  Once you get past the ugly word (cancer) it gets a lot easier. Your old plymouth is good for you, several times a day I just go out and wipe it with a cloth, don't do much, but it sure helps. In 20 years we will have to start a old plymouth owners cancer surviors' club , you can be president, I'll be vice president. It will get better after chemo, and by the way, my hair does look better the second time around.
God bless you

Mike thanks for the insight, it is greatly apprciated.  Yes, It was hard to tell my loved ones, my wife was wife me the day we found out, but of four boys, only one lives in the area, the other three are scattered around the US and Turkey, it was hard to explain to them over the phone.  Josh, the one son that lives in Oklahoma just had a good friend of his go thru basically the same cancer as me, he said it was rough, but as of now he is doing good.  The hardest part for me since the cemo treatments have started isn't the many bathroom trips, vomitting, but the loss of apitite.  All during my life, if I was sick, I still wanted to eat, not this time, nothing tastes good, not even my coffee, which I would drink close to two pots of black coffee during the course of the say.

I do know that between this forum and the p-15-d24 forum I have had lots of prayers and well wishes headed my way, not to mention that other members have either gone thru related case like mine or has know someone who has.

I like you idea about a cancer survivor's Old Plymouth Club:):)

Mike thanks again and I have included you in my prayers,
Bob

Hey Bob,

Glad you were able to put some miles on the '40 with your navigator. We're keeping two of the grandkids this weekend, but their mother won't let them ride in the '36, cuz it doesn't have seat belts and airbags.  :)  I explained that I was 24 years old before I owned a car with seat belts (airbags were in the distant future), but it didn't do any good.

When I finally put the Plymouth on the road in '92, our two youngest were 11 and 10 years old, they road with me where ever I went in the old Plymouth and did so until they each grew up and left the house.  NO seat belts were ever used, but in our daily drivers during that time it was made clear by me that they would hook up when ever they got in the car or truck or what ever I was driving at the time.

Being that the Plymouth didn't have seat belts when new, I was not required by law to have them installed so that the kids go ride in the car.

I too was in my 20's before I had a car with seat belts.

Hey Pat, I think you need to put the air Bags in your front shirt pockets, and practice blowing... Maybe with a straw. lol
I did put seat belt in both, the 29 and the 39. I feel more comfortable with the belts, especially with the grand kids with me. I used to run stock cars, in the 60s and 70s, after rolling a couple times seat belts made a believer out of me. (I know, not original) lol
Glad you had a chance to get out with Cooper and enjoy yourself, you needed that.
Take care.

The local flying club (grass runway) has a fly-in, drive-in breakfast on one Sunday a month in warm weather. We would like to let the grandkids ride there (8 miles one way, the entire distance on township blacktop roads) in the rumble seat. We usually only encounter one vehicle each way.

But their parents say that it is verboten, and I said that I would respect their wishes. Very different from how I grew up.

We own an open one acre lot next to our house. When my youngest son was 14, I would sit in a lawn chair with a beer, watching him and his buddy drive a '49 Dodge around the empty lot.

Hay Bob just checking in,

As far as seat belts go I don't remember when they were first installed in cars but I do remember when I started using them.  Summer of 2005.  I just got tired of paying the tickets.  So much said for living in a free country.   Pretty soon they will pass a law that requires mandatory exercise because we are all getting to broad in the waist.   Mark my words its coming.

Sorry for the rant.., Glad to hear that you are out and about in the old Plymouth.

Chet,
Not a problem with the "rant"  I agree with you whole heartly.  I remember when I had a Honda motorcylcle back in the middle '60's helments weren't required but it wasn't long afterwards that they became required and that was when I realized that the government was getting involved in our every day lives.  Now the mayor of NYC wants to stop the selling of the super sized soft drinks, There are so many other things that need attention, just makes me cringe at what the government is trying to do...........

Needless to say I agree with you my friend,

Bob,

Is this for real ?  I heard something to this effect on the news awhile back.  You are right, with everything going on these days regulating how much soda a person drinks is nuts.  Anyway you can always buy two 12oz. cans and wind up drinking 24 instead of 16 ozs.

Just read on another forum where a guy got an appearence ticket for washing his car in his driveway and allowing the water to drain into the street and then into the storm drain. Fine could be anywhere from 25 bucks to 200. Something about discharge of untreated water. But that was in Albuqueque, NM where water is a scarce and highly regulated commodity.  Everybody thught this was terrible and the product of this current and invasive administration.  IN reality the ordinance has been on the books since the late 80's, likely dragged out for enforcement when the current city government was looking for was to make up for lost revenue.

Bloomberg missed the boat here, instead of banning big sodas, he should have slapped a city surcharge on them and collected some revenue, maybe used it to kill some rats.

We have a town ordinance that says you can not park a vehicle in your yard unless it on a hard permanent surface.  I have a couple of trailers, and had an extra car parked in the rear of my yard.  The code guy came one day and was going to write up some citations.  But each of the offending items was actually parked on some pressure treated 2 x 8's.  He tried to tell me that wasn't a permanent surface.  I mentioned that the wood was certified for 30 years when in cotnact with the ground, and suggested that that was more permanent than he was..... he put his book away and left.  This ordiance came about because someone in the town had parked their motor home in their frot yard in such a way that it blocked sight lines at an intersection.  So instead of dealing with that guy on an individual basis,  the town council passed the permanent parking pad thing, and then started snooping around with dollar signs in the codes guys eyes.

You have that right about the City Fathers (Government)  (whoever) are trying things to raise money. The people are also at fault with some of this.  In SD they added an extra $1.00 a pack tax on cigarettes, the people voted to aprove it. (Cigarette are now 5 to 6 dollars a pack). They tryed to added a .05 cent tax on a mixed drink at the bar, it would add maybe an extra .25 cents on a night out, so drinks remain at 1.50 to 2.50 for most mixed drinksm. The people voted that one down. lol People like to drink more than smoke I guess. lol I think they watch other states to see what they are doing to raise money before trying it themselves.  I should try NYs fattening sodas I guess, I am 150 lbs , soaked and wet. I could use a few pounds. lol  So much for my rant... and I don't even drink or smoke, I just work on the "Good Ole Plymouths"for my kicks. lol

It was two weeks yesterday since Cooper and I have been out in the "Wayback Machine"  It takes me two weeks or so after the chemo treatments to begin to feel like myself again.  Well, I had my second round to treatments June 11 and the Dr was very pleased that the tumor had shrunk to were it isn't noticable with the first round of treatments.  I start my third round of chemo treatments on July 2.

To make a long story short, Cooper and I fired up the "Wayback Machine" to go for our first ride in over two weeks.  We drove to one of our favorite spots by the Rondout Reservoir to walk around.  A Jeep from PA stopped and asked if they could take photos of the car, naturally I said yes and then they asked if their Grandson could sit behind the steering wheel so they could get more photos, again naturally I said yes.  We had a good visit and that is what the old car hobby is all about, making friends out of strangers and that I did today.

On the way back home I stopped in Grahamsville across from the Town Hall to take this photo as the flags are now on the Gazebo.

Just a nice day to be out and about,
Bob

Hey Bob,

Cool photo near the gazebo...I hope you're feeling OK this morning.

We went out for supper with another couple Friday night...on the way back to their house, there was a car show at the local root beer stand...my favorite (shhh, don't tell anyone) was a '32 Ford coupe built Old School style (big & little tires, no fenders, all steel, '48 Ford truck flathead with 2 deuces, etc. and a black primer paint job. Very nicely done, just like in the '50s.
Only saw one Plymouth, a '37 coupe street rod with a big OHV V-8.

Thanks Pat, do feel good this morning, getting ready for my second cup of coffee, my youngest son is coming over later this morning and we are going to go to a car show in Big Indian,NY.  We aren't taking the Plymouth, but I am getting out of the house for a change of menu.  I was told that I could go as long as we didn't stay too long and that I must wear a mask.

Drove the Plymouth 20 miles east of here this morning to meet up with Rich Wahredorff, President of the Hudson Valley POC for breakfast.  I even got to  meet his wonderful wife Michelle.  We had a good breakfast, talked old Plymouths, especially his 1935 PJ that is just about finished and ready to be driven to Michigan next weekend for the PJ tour.  Ah life is good, yes it is:):)

I haven't posted any photos since July on this thread as I was treated for throat cancer beginning shortly after my last post.  Here are some photos that I have taken since we came home the first part of Oct.

The red building is a school house that dates back to the 1850's.

My GPS unit, Cooper came to live with us four years ago today, he was seven weeks old, I sure do love that little bundle of fur

SD Glenn,
Other than losing our power for four days, we did well here, our next door neighbor had a tree come down, but missed the house thankfully.

The one photo shows the tree in thier dooryard, and other one that is lookin towards my house shows how high the tree snapped off

Hay Bob,

Glad you made it through Sandy with no damage.  Oct / Nov are great months for the Catskill area.  Though your pictures still had a lot of leaves.  Down here in Virginia we still have plenty of leaves on the trees also.

Just got back from Delaware and had some siding that came off the house.  Spent some time yesterday doing the repairs.  So we are ready for storm number 2.  Hopefully no big deal.

Take care,  Chet...

Your 39 is looking good Seb, hows it drive? I did drive mine about 130 miles Saturday. Quite a few of us met up in a little town about 70 miles from my home,( I still have a heating problem) a couple others drove there also, a 1934 Ply Rod and a 48 Coupe. Looking good. We set up a new  Region POC. Called it the "Lewis and Clark POC Region" for the eastern part of SD. It will be coming out in the new POC Bulletin I think.

Hey Bob, Get ready for the winter of 2012.  The snow storm just left SD, so I reckon it will be at your place shortly, if not sooner. lol  We got pretty well socked in, roughly 8 inches then the wind came up, so now we have drifts too.  Oh well that is normal for us, how you doing. The 39 got left outside and has a real snow cap now, may need to get the snowblower out for that. Will get it in the garage as soon as I get the stupid Mustang out. lol

We had a decent day weatherwise here in the Catskills yesterday, so Cooper and I went for about a 20 mile ride in the Plymouth, just makes winter that much shorter.  If you look closely at the two photos with the water you can see the white caps from the wind and ice in the other one.  We also stopped for a cup of coffee.  I know the salt on the roads will make some of you cringe, but after surviving two heart attacks, nine weeks of chemotherapy and 35 radiation treatments this past year, I am going to enjoy that old Plymouth as much as possible when ever possible, as one just never knows and boy did I find that out

Fine to see You doing plyMiles!
Salt is not good for cars and dogs. So give them a good wash - if the garage is heated.
If not, wait until spring. Your mountain guys know of cold temperatures!

Here, in proximity of river Rhine, we seldom have longer times much below 30 deg. F.
But the streets are really full of salt, because of 1/10 inch of snow....

All the best from D?sseldorf!

So it takes two to run the plow? I guess I'll have to take a closer look at the CalTrans plows when I see them in operation. I've only noticed a driver, not at separate operator for the plow and wing. Same thing for the rotary plows... Only noticed the driver. On the other hand, when the plow goes by I'm mostly looking for getting out of the way so I very well might not notice that kind of detail.

Hey all,  Bob and Go - - I think this website is plenty fast, maybe check with your IPs. Of course I may be slowing down also and don't notice. lol   I like your car Sebastiano, it still looks like mine. lol  What is that headlight you have on the left side, is that a conversion to a square type headlight?  I hope to have mine ready to "Drive" it to the Meet in Arizona in April, should be a nice drive, roughly 1500 miles from me to Az. I'm not in a hurry so it should be OK. And I will keep my fingers crossed.  Wish me goodluck with that. lol   We have plows similar to yours Bob, however not as large, and perhaps not all 4 wheel drive .

Glenn, I don't mean slow as in computer slow, slow as in comments and usage, like I mentioned before, if it wasn't for a certain few members, this forum would be commentless, which is too bad as it is a nice forum and I have learned alot since being a member.

Tod, we have Oshkosh and International trucks for our plow trucks, the controls for the plow and wing sit in front of the passenger seat.  The sander controls are to the driver's right between the bucket seats.

The State trucks only use the driver, no wingman most of the time, (to save money) the controls in the state trucks are to the driver's right between the seats.

Your car looks good in that Ad, back in the day it probable was, if you could find it.  Glad you are doing well Bob, don't forget to leave that shovel alone.  I don't feel so left out this morning, I have about 8-10 inches of fresh snow, with more coming by the hour.  Not sure where we will end up, but we have NO wind yet, so it isn't too bad.  Take care Bob

I had the Plymouth out today for the first time in almost a month, that is a story in itself, here are two photos of the Plymouth and Neversink, Res that supplies water to NYC.  You can see that it is completely frozen over

Here are a few photos that I antiqued, I may have posted them before, but here goes just the same.  It has been cold, damp day with some freezing rain and snow showers here in the Catskills today.  Just thought these photos would warm things up

Cooper and I were out and about in the "Wayback Machine" a couple of times this past week, just have to share. If you look closely you can see the ice build up along the rock cut.  There is no place to park on either side of the road through this one area, so that is why I took them through the windshield.

The one of Cooper and the Coupe was in this weeks local paper.  I like the way they incorporated this weekends time change into the article.

Hope everyone has a great upcoming weekend,
Bob

Take care

Boys, nice shots of this winter!
I didn?t drive since October because of bad weather, now it is nicer, but we need a heavy rain to wash all that salt from our roads.

For Coopper: our cat still is swtched in winter mode...

Brian,
My bell housing from the old engine bolted right up to the other engine, so we were able to use my column shift tranny

I learned a lot from this engine change, many of the parts were interchangeable, like the bell housing and tranny, also the water pump, and  intake and exhaust manifolds.  I had to use those part off of my '41 engine on the '36 engine, plus the oil filler tube and my distributor.

Its five weeks now that weather is fine.
I try to work on the car outside in my yard having my tools and shop there.
I put a new rubber floor , had to make it in 4 pieces, but looks fine!
The original stays under it but has gotten very dry and fragile...

It is a 50 ie p20 motor in good running condition. Let me know if interest or anyone else who might want a good 50 motor. Burns no oil and runs strong.

Yesterday, on Sunday, my 88 and 89 yrs old parents in Bonn (ex- Capital of Germany) had their 65th wedding anniversary.
They invited the family (me, my 2 sisters, the wife/husbands, the 7 grandchilds, their 5 partners, 3 grand-grand childs (-not everybody was able to attend-) plus a couple of old friends ) to lunch and coffee at Bad Honnef, "am Domstein" vine cellars.
Domstein is a vintage quarry, 30 mls up Rhine from Cologne, where they got the stones from to build the K?lner Dom, built in some hundred years.
http://www.weinhaus-domstein.de/bildergalerie.html
One hour Autobahn from D?sseldorf with the plymouth, my wife and me picked them up and had to take the K?nigswinter ferry to cross the Rhine River.
http://www.faehre-koenigswinter.de/index.php/fotos
The route back we took another ferry at Niederdollendorf, a few miles down stream. Ferrys have to avoid heavy freighter traffic, the belgian one was very fast down stream!
http://www.faehre-godesberg.de/index.php
The convertible is much more easier to board for my parents, the Mercedes station and the convertble of my wife are much smaller! I still keep Pa?s Peugeot 504 4dr Sedan from 1978, it is larger than Claudi?s cars too.

Good health to everyone, specially Bob! Greetings from D?sseldorf! Go

I had found an old B&W photo of a lady sitting on the front fender of a 1940 Plymouth convertible, so I saved it with the thought of asking my wife to pose for an updated photo.  I asked her yesterday if she minded, she said no, so is the original and the two that I took yesterday

Just having fun recreating the past and enjoying the present,

Bill,

All our snow has stayed in Canada so far this winter, do to the weather pattern.  Can't say as if I am complaining, the fire wood and fuel oil last longer and the "Wayback Machine" driving time as surely increased   No real winter weather until after the first of the year supposedly

Thanks Chet for the kind words.

Cooper and I were out and about again today, temps in the lower 50's and plenty of sunshine with no snow, no snow in the Catskills of NY on Feb 2, unheard of  LOL.

I drove up to the Beaverkill Covered Bridge which is about 30 miles from our house, but the bridge was closed for repairs, so I turned around and started for home, got a few miles from the bridge and there was an old barn that I wanted to get a photo of, just as I pulled over to stop, the owner was getting home also.  I got out of the Plymouth and asked him if he minded me getting a photo of his barn, he told me no to go ahead and as he said that he noticed the 1940 World's Fair plate topper that I have on my 1940 NY state License plate that also has the 1940 World's Fair on it.  He told me that he visited the fair as a young child.  I asked him to sit on my rear bumper so that I could get a photo of him by the plate and he said yes.  I then asked him if he had an email address, he said yes and when I got home I sent him this photo.  To me this is one of the greatest thrills of owning an old car, is the memories they bring back to people and yesterday I did just that

I like Your Post Card Idea! Very artisticaly done! Brings memories back:
In former years I shot holiday pic (on Kodakchrome Gold negatives!) brought them to the hnearest Foto business, got it back 3 or 4 days later, chose one for the post card, let it duplicate a dozen times, got them 3 or 4 days later and glued a Postcard back sticker on each. I took these stickers with me every time in the holidays and had them written to all friends  within the time I got the duplicates. Than , a couple of days remained before returning home. As this was usually in Italy - where the mail is (was?) veeeery slow, I often was back earlier than the postcards!
Was funny, anyhow.
One of these hung for 12 Years above the bar of my preferred italian  :))  Restaurant here!

Enjoyed the recent March-April edition on 40 Plymouths and especially the article about you and your car. I was quite amazed that we have much in common. First, my name is Bob Downes. Second, I own a 1940 P10 Plymouth business coupe that has been in storage for many years but is now being worked on. And finally, I was also in the Air Force. Pretty amazing similarities. I was a member of the Plymouth Club many years ago and just recently rejoined when I took the car out of storage. Many of the parts being used to restore the car were obtained from the former President of the Ohio Chapter who also had a 1940 Business Coupe that took national awards and was on the cover of a past edition of the Plymouth Club magazine along with an article about him and the car.

Best Regards. Bob Downes

Sorry for the delay in replying. I'm not a tech person so don't know how to attach photos and have very few. Acquired car about 25 years ago and has mainly been in storage because of work and moving quite a few years ago. Was, and actually still is a shell, totally stripped except for body and engine. No interior, trim, most glass and other parts. I acquired most needed items from vendors, club members and dealers but mainly still all in boxes. Have acquired most parts and quite a few duplicates to have restored but just now having it done. If I learn how to send photos, I will do.

Bob,

Good to hear from you again,

Who was the Ohio President that you got parts from and what issue was his write up in the bulletin?  I have most all of my back issues from 1994 5o present, it would give me something to do on a rainy day to look for that issue.

I was out yesterday with mine, put approx. 60 miles on her running around and taking photos.

Years ago Jim Benjaminson sent me a copy of the history of the 1940 Plymouth, If you are interested I can copy it and mail it to you
Title: Re: The "Wayback Machine"
Post by: downes on June 25, 2016, 12:41:09 AM
The President of the Ohio Chapter at the time I got many parts was Ron Brubaker. His car was on the cover of the November-December issue of the Plymouth Bulletin, Issue No 191. Page 2 has a brief discussion about the photo. I thought there was also another article about the car in this  edition but don't see it since it covers 1941 Plymouths. Must be in another book I have somewhere. I'll try to locate it and let you know.

Did you know that The Bulletin is downloaded to the Store and you can read it for free ?
Most of the time, this digital copy of The Bulletin is posted in the Store before you receive
the paper copy.  Also, the digital copy is very clear and you can enlarge the pages if you
need a closer look at some detail.

Hi Bob Downes,
To write down this instruction, I had to run through the procedure myself.
The tag is bolted to the air filter screw and remembers me, when the biannual oilchange of transmission, overdrive, universalshaft and differential is due (older foto!)!

- click button "reply" (headline)
- click line below text input space "Attachments and other options"
- click below "search" (I only have the german name "durchsuchen")
         (-you get Your explorer index)
- choose Your image file (observe number and size restrictions!)
- click "preview" to check
- click "post"

Greetings from D?sseldorf!

Bob, finally located the magazine issue that had an article about Ron Brubaker's 1940 Plymouth P10 business coupe. It is the January 1992 edition of the Mopar Collectors Guide, pages 46 - 49. Sorry it took me so long to locate this. Hope you can find it.
Bob

Hi Bob thought it about time I came across for a chat, know your hon a bit of a roller coaster with your health issues ongoing but you just go day at a time and be good to yourself. Nothing to prove, no mountains to climb and for goodness sake stop putting yourself day about your size, I for one don't want to read about this FAT old man, the Dr's can tell you to lose weight but have you noticed the size of some of them. We are what we are, if you were seven feet tall they wouldn't have a problem with your 50" waste, you just tell them you endurance testing a Plymouth for Walter Chrysler and he's not going to get the results any time soon. Love your stories, your openness, Patty and your family, trips in the car and the plow, your a great ambassador to the Plymouth brand. King of Neversink.

Hope this gives you a smile it comes from the heart to a very dear friend I found along life road.

Tom,

Thanks for the kind words, it has been a roller coaster ride for my wife and I now for close to five years, but with the good Lord over looking us and all the help from family and friends, we have both survived for another day.

Yes, I do enjoy the Plymouth Owner's Club very much, sometimes I feel that I am a PITA with all the postings that I do, but I have to admit, I love the club, my 1940 "Wayback Machine" that is a driver, not a show car, plus as you and most everyone else knows, I love sharing my rides in the car with Cooper as my GPS unit.  LOL.  These old cars are truly a time machine and need to be driven and shown off to the general public.

Again, thanks for the kind words my friend and yes Tom, I count you as a true friend

Bob, "Kink of Neversink" (  :)) makes a better rime than king!)
I heartly agree to Tom?s words!
And best wishes added to Your Cooper too!
Our dog Cooper had only 2 Plymouth occasions this year, because familiy duties kept the Ply in its garage most of the year.
As my 91 year old mother?s move from Bonn to a new place 1 block from my house in D?sseldorf is nearly complete, the coming year promises to be more Plymouth and Cooper orientated.
In the meantime our Zoo likes relaxing...
  All the best from here!!
Yours Go

Thought I would copy this across from the FaceBook page as some of us may not be aware Bob has had open heart surgery recently, this is what Patty wrote " Bobs update today. I think he is doing amazingly. He has been moved out of icu to coronary cooler step down Unit. He has been out of bed and walked in the hall several times. His nasal gastric tube was removed and he's on a regular diet. He looks good and said he doesn't feel too bad. He is very tired. He said to say hi to all and to thank you again for reaching all of the prayers and we'll wishes." What I have come to know of Bob he won't be offline for long. God speed an early recovery.
