steering wheel not straight??

I'd guess that most cars that old have been through at least one front end alignment shop that did not care to take the extra minute to assure that the steering wheel was "on center". As long as it wasn't too far off the customer would not bring it back in and complain. After all, it was an old car and everyone knows old cars have issues like that.

I want to straighten the steering wheel on my 1953. It is about 15% off center to the right. I know I should know how to do this, but I just can't remember how. Any help out there?? Do I have to take the steering all apart?? or what. ???

Hey guys mine is also about 15% off center. are all 53-54s "off-center"?

Hey thanks for the fast reply. Good. Sounds to be kind of on the easy side. When the weather brakes out this way I will try it out. I have the car out side for the winter, my old car is in the grage, and my wife likes to park in there. There was no more room of the Plymouth. Now if I can only find my left from my right, Ha,Ha. ;D

I agree with Tod.? I'm not sure of the 53, but centring generally requires lengthening the tie rod on the opposte side to the steering wheel's off centre direction and shortening the other one by the exact same number of turns. Of course, all the steering linkage needs to be good condition before this is done.

I haven't worked on a 53, but on many cars it is a matter of adjusting the tie rods by the same number of turns but in opposite directions (so you don't change the toe-in).
