vacuum connections

Thanks for that information, I would imagine that the vacuum is greater in that location as opposed to the one on my carb that is close to the choke location. I also made a mistake in the brand of carb. it's a Stromberg, not a Rochester.

Yes the original would have been a Carter DTR09 I believe. And the pipe coming off the manifold is normally the only vaccuum source and it's siamesed to feed the wipers and dist.

It is a Rochester carb that was on the car when I got it. I understand that Carter was the original. Is the vacuum connection you discribed for both the distributor and the windshield operation? I have a picture of a 31 and it appears that there is a vacuum hose connected to the manifold next to the flange for the carb. I assume that it operates the windshield wipers as it is rubber and the line to the distrib. should be copper.

I looked at the photo of the '31 carb and there is no connection on it for vaccuum, at least none in the diagram I have. I have both the 'exploded' parts view and a b+w photo. Vaccuum is usually taken off the side of the intake manifold just below the carb mounting flange not off the carb body. Are you sure you have a '31 PA carb?

I have an updraft carb on my 31 and there are two locations to connect vacuum lines. one is just behind the choke butterfly location, about 3/4" and the other is just before the connection of the carb to the intake manifold. It appears that the vacuum advance for the distrib. connects next to the choke location and the other would be for the operation of the windshield wiper motor. Can anyone shed some light on this? Any and all input is welcome.
