hub cap removal

Whats been tried and true for me is wrapping the prying end of a hammer with a towel and using carefully..

I haven't had to remove my hub caps since I heard this, so I don't know for sure if it works: put a plastic putty knife or bondo spreader flat on the painted surface then pry against it.

Has any one figured out a nifty tool to pry the hub cap off that doesn't scratch the paint?
