Air traped in the heater can cause a water gushing sound on some vehicles. Have you changed coolant recently or had a coolant leak?

Thanks for the post. All vacuum hoses have been replaced, however in light of my other post you responded too in detail ( thanks ) about the soot etc. I will be rechecking for a system leak.

Don, I can't visualise a 'water gushing' sound, in terms of some known malfunction.

Could your problem be what I would call a 'hissing' sound, from a vacuum leak?

A remote possibility, but worth a look, might be the rubber hose for the vacuum wipers. If its old/dried-out/brittle and has developed a little crack somewhere, the motion of the engine on its mounts may intermittently open the crack enough to create a vacuum hiss. The vacuum hoses for wipers really should be replaced on any older car, as they degrade from age and then crack from vibration.

Generator bearings/generator brush noise/fan belt noise?

Just how frequent/intermittent is the noise, how long does it persist at any one time?

Recently my P-9 developed a strange "water gushing" sound that seems to come and go at random driving straight, turning, accelerating and decelerating. There are no visible leaks and the car is running very smoothly. I suspected the fan, the belt, the water pump, and/or the radiator but have been unable to find it. Has anyone else experienced this strange occurrence?
