The project you have in mind is simply not realistically possible, at least in terms of a useful finished product. The contours of the after body part of a '49 are very different from the earlier coupes and roadsters, so much so that a rumble seat would be very difficult to access by its potential passengers.

In theory, of course, assuming you have the skills and equipment for custom body work, you could cut the deck lid in half, weld the back section to the body, hinge the front section with some tricky hinge arrangement, and make up a seat to fit under it. You could, in theory, cut out little sections of a back fender to fit some sort of steps, and fit some sort of hand-rail, but making such an arrangement look even remotely aesthetically acceptable would be extremely difficult, for practical purposes impossible.

In short, its a really bad idea.

If you really want a rumble seat car, sell the '49, and look for a '39 or earlier coupe orroadster/ convertible. Its a lot more realistic and practical to keep looking til you find an original rumble seat car, but if all you can find is a business coupe with a 'trunk' deck lid, you can rebuild one of those into a rumble seat car, by examining an original rumble seat car, then duplicating the components needed.

ok so i gots me a 49 allright im into modifying these suckers....im thinkin of turning my trunk into a rumble seat....any ideas on howtos??? or any ideas or has anyone actually done this??? wut will i need
