1936 plymouth vin numbers

Tod has it pretty well right with his info on identification numbers.  The serial number is on the right front door post, body number on the firewall and engine number on the left front corner of the block.  All 1936 engine numbers started with "P2" - regardless if it was a P1 Business series or P2 Deluxe series car.  And the engine number is stamped into the frame, left rear side of the frame rail in the area where the frame "kicks up" for the suspension travel--you have to have the left rear tire removed to find it.  If you want to contact me direct, my e-mail is

There are three different numbers on the car:

Engine number on block above generator. It will start with the engineering code of the vehicle (P1 or P2 for 1936 motors). The engine number is also stamped on the frame on the driver side where the kick up for the rear axle is.

Body number. On a plate on the firewall. The style of this tag and the letters and numbers stamped on it seem to vary with the year and with the plant that built the body (not the final assembly plant). Generally it will tell you the body style (Jim Benjaminson can likely help decoding on that). But if the tag is there it will most likely tell you what you can see: 2 door or 4 door sedan, coupe, etc.

Serial number. This is a string of digits (no letters) located on a tag on your right (passenger) side front door hinge post. This is the number that Chrysler used to track the car and is the number you need to get the build sheet from the Chrysler Historical Collection.

The serial number is the nearest number on the car that would correlate to a modern VIN. However a lot of states used the engine number for registration purposes.

hello, thanks for letting me on your site. my questions are: on a 1936 plymouth are their numbers stamped into the frame anywhere? if so where. i have been led to believe that the vin#, registration# whatever you wan't to refer it as. was based on the numbers stamped on the motor block. and if memory serves me their was a tag on the firewall with a "body number" stamped on it? please correct me if i am wrong. also does anyone make these tags for the firewall for restoration purposes or have a service that will restore yours? the reason i ask is i do know that the stock 201.3 motor is stamped p2 and have owned 36' with motors changed to other years, ex p10. is their a vin tag on the car or does the firewall tag number match engine. thanks ;D
