For the drain plug - it is a toss-up - you should change the filter every time you change the transmission fluid - always - that means the pan has to drop - main reason they stopped putting plugs in the pan.  Best option - sounds like you are doing a little more than just "driving" - check with your local Mopar dealer - get the Mopar performance oil pan for your 727 - below is a shot from Jims Performance parts site - check local first - I got mine for $45 with my discount.

On the shift kit - I have heard a lot of good for B&M.

Check the numbers on the side of the pan rail - just above the pan on the passenger side - that should have the complete part number for the transmission along with serial number - that should identify if it is a lock-up or not.

if its a lock up you should be able to feel when it locks up. will feel like it shifts in 4th when there isn't a 4th

I know this is a resto board so apologies for the modification questions, but you folks are the ones with the knowledge.

Is there any way to tell whether a 727 is a lockup without taking it out of the car?  What's the best shift kit?  B&M? TransGo? Mopar? What?  ('38 Plymouth coupe with 360/727/8.25 - stock except for Edelbrock Performer intake/600 cfm 4-barrel. Weighs about 3K - daily driver with the occasional stoplight sweepstakes.)  I'm mainly asking which brand(s) you folks have had the best experience with - but specific part number recommendations will be appreciated also.  And has anyone had experience with those trans drain plug kits you install in the pan - do they leak?

TIA for any help.
