It is my understanding that 12v points style ignition systems still used 6v at the points themselves. There was a dropping resistor either in the coil or separate (typically called a ballast) to covert the 12v battery voltage to around 6 volts.

So I think you'd use the same points and condenser as you would on a 6v car.

My vague recollection is that Chrysler products typically used the external ballast resistor with a bypass to allow 12v to the coil when the starter motor was cranking to make starting easier. But once started the bypass was off and the ignition ran on about 6v.

As far as cranking but not starting, first see if you have any spark at all. Then double check that you have the plug wires in the correct order. Finally check your timing.

My '53 Cranbrook has been converted to a 12-volt pattern, and I have replaced the coil, plugs, plug wires, added fuel and will crank but will not start.  What distributor rotor, ignition condenser and ignition points will I need?  Can I go with what is recommended for a 6-volt engine?  Thank you in advance.
